I might have had the same issue as you. If it turns out we did have the same problems then you can take a look at this link I started http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=44036
This is what I did to solve my problem in vista
Go to the command prompt and type this in:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service
Then reboot your computer.
After you run that command you can verify its success by typing in:
net Localgroup Administrators
It should spit out something to this effect:
Administrator
LOCAL
NT AUTHORITY\SERVICE
<Insert your user name here>
The Command Completed Successfully

its cause youre using a widescreen monitor, it only does 4:3, you can go higher, i'll just check my other rig (its widescreen, but i cant remember the command off the top of my head:o)

you have to add the res as pictured to the end of the target (right click the launcher, and edit the target as i have, obviously substituting my native res with your own)

the game will still run stretched, but its well established that this is unavoidable with bf games *obligatory fistshake at EA*

edit: Grings beat me to it! DOH! :toast:
"D:\Games\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +playNow 1 +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900"
That is the full Target line in my BF2142 shortcut. I had bad luck with BF2 and this, seems PB detects it in BF2, but I'm okay in 2142. My LCD's native res is 1440x900 at 16:10 ratio, and my max setting in the game is also 1280x1024, I set it to that and adjust all visual properties then added the extra stuff to the target line. I just got done with the 1.40 patch for 2142, but it's late, I'll have to check out the new map tomorrow. Anyways hope that helps!

yeah I've never had luck with the res tag in the bf2 shortcut and it still doesn't work
I actually meant the resolution options in game,
at least with other video cards I have up to 1400x1050 available in game yet with the upgrade to the 2900 now bf2 is only registering that I have up to 1280x1024

Get this figured out? Did you install your monitor drivers?

nope, still only allows those low settings and yeah I installed the monitor drivers :(
I'm not going to bother with it for now because I'm installing vista soon along with getting a different monitor (and hooking up crossfire) so we'll see what happens then

Is there a fix to overclocking your GPU and PB yet? Everytime I OC I black screen having to reboot. It's found in Rivatuner's description when you download.Protect Process (http://forum.nexthardware.com/showthread.php?t=50654)
Added protective technologies aimed to jam unsafe memory scanner of PunkBuster anticheat system and this way prevent this anticheat system from crashing graphics hardware when RivaTuner resides in memory. Unfortunately new 1.7xx versions of PunkBuster client (debuted on 04.17.2007 with Battlefield 2142 client) caused major system stability issues in conjunction with wide range of applications accessing hardware via user mode MMIO address ranges. Apart from scanning executable code new PunkBuster services also fully scan data memory ranges of each process, which is critically dangerous when it comes to applications accessing hardware registers via memory mapped I/O port user address ranges. Unauthorized access to hardware mapped memory ranges performed by anticheat system's memory scanner may cause unpredictable results including hardware failures and freezing. The problem is not specific to RivaTuner and also covers wide range of ATI and NVIDIA oriented diagnostic, overclocking and monitoring tools (e.g. ATITool, PowerStrip, HIS iTurbo etc) developed by third parties as well as by certified AIB/AIC partners. The situation had been investigated with help of Battlefield 2142 gamers community and is fully documented in RivaTuner's support forums, however, many inexperienced gamers never visit forums or read documentation and still wrongly interpret these crashes as instability of third party tools including RivaTuner, hurting software reputation in different forums this way. Unfortunately, the problem is still neither fixed nor documented by Evenbalance, furthermore, the situation got critically worse in the end on June 2007 when Evenbalance launched the same unsafe PunkBuster clients v1.7xx for America's Army, Call of duty, Call of duty 2, Enemy territory: Quake Wars, F.E.A.R etc. Due to this sad reason I cannot longer wait for response and fix from Evenbalance and risk RivaTuner software reputation because of anticheat system issues. The following features are introduced and aimed to prevent RivaTuner from being improperly accessed by PunkBuster or any similar memory scanner
Process protection. Now RivaTuner reduces its own access privileges after startup to prevent simple user mode memory scanners from accessing RivaTuner's process virtual memory. This protective technique is enabled by default, but it can be disabled by setting ProtectProcess registry entry to 0.

I'm on my laptop, atm, but I'm just posting before I forget.
Look through the Documents > Battlefield 2 folders, for profile folders, and look for video.conf
I set up my video resolution both in video.conf, and the command line options, and it's running it at 1680x1050 now, just fine.

In december I got the new ATI 3870. Battlefield 2 will not work. It would carsh to desktop and give me a error rendDx9.dll error 1280x768. I called EA and ATI for support but were not help. After 3 months i found by mistake the DVI to HDMI adaptor that came with the video card was the problem. So I replaced the adaptor with a DVI to HDMI cable . This error happend in Vista x86 and x64 + server 2008 x64. My monitor is a LCD using HDMI.

have you tried the suggestions provided above?
basically the most useful thing to do if you ever have problems with BF2 is deleting the BF2 folder in My Documents
