Ive just about sorted out what im doing for my new computer, but i cant decide on a motherboard.

The shop that im getting it from only has the Striker Extreme and the XFX 680i boards for their SLi range, and i was just wondering which of these 2 boards would be best to overclock my Q6600. Keep in mind i have never OC'ed anything before, but from what i have read on these forums, it shouldnt be too hard to at least try. I was only aiming to get it to about 3.0 GHz.

Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I'd get the Asus

Edit:I forgot to say why.....They overclock better and personally I think that ASUS is far better than XFX

680i's were made for overclocking Quads.

xfx, striker extreme has a lot of trouble with quad cores, why not go evga a1?

I have to agree, I would go with the evga a1.

You should really fill out your location and system specs so people don't get confused.

Have you tried using staticice.com.au and shopbot.com.au?? They are both fairly good sites for finding online pc parts...

i think im just gonna go the Striker Extreme, and see how it goes. I should be able to hopefully overclock my Q6600 to 2.8-3.0 GHz i would think with the new bios updates and everything. Im not really trying to push it too the extremes, and it appears that everyone that has that combo of CPU/mobo can at least get to the range im looking at.

I just got the ASUS P5N32-E 680i with the Q6600 G0. I can't say I don't like it but I am having a problem that I hope someone can help me with.

I have DDR-800 memory from G-skill (2x -1GB). Here's my problem...

In the Bios if I set the FSB above 300 to obtain 2.8Ghz or higher with memory set at 400mhz (DDR2 = 800mhz) I can't get past the post (It is a barrier at this exact point). I have played with the voltages and that doesn't help. Another forum told be to lower my memory speed and then try it.

Is this accurate, what should I lower my memory to?

If you need anymore information from me please let me know.

Thanks for any help,

Dallas

Does that shop sell the Asus P5N32 "plus?"

It's a 650i chipset, with all of the 680i features. I think the 650 chipset is more stable all around.

when u have the board, try the second latest bios. and please dont use the asus update thingy. just flash the bios with usb flash stick thru ez flash 2 in bios.

ASUS striker extreme has problems OC'ing the quads. i've had 4 of them and they all had the same problem. my A1 evga board takes my q6600 all the way to 4.3ghz and can run benches and orthos 24hr fine.... i don't like the temps though. go with an evga.

well it appears the shop i was getting them from also doesnt have the 8800 Ultra's in stock that i was after, so im just gonna order them and the eVGA 680i mobo and just wait until they come in.
