I'm getting an Antec 900 computer case, and an Q6600. I was hoping someone could suggest to me the best possible solution for a heatsink for my situation. Also will I need any aftermarket fans with the beast of a case?

no need for aftermarket fans unless you want a 120mm in the door( does not come with). I see no need to get one honestly. As for a cooler....GO WATER!!! thats my opinion. Ive had a Zalman9500 and was bested by the cheap Arctic freezer series coolers evey time. Cheap and reliable. As far as for your Q6600 I will push you back to Random as I've personally never ran one and wont just recommend items on a whim like others have in this thred!

Also I noticed that newegg heatsink doesn't come with instructions which would be a must since its my first time. How much better are the fans you suggested compared to the stock ones?

seriously though, i would either go with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro, thermalright ultra120 or ultra120 extreme, or a scythe infinity. on the infinity and ultra120's you'll want to pick up a high-cfm 120mm fan, maybe two for the infinity.

a lot lot better, the thermalrights will give you about the best performance that you can get on air, or as sneekypeet has suggested, go with water for more performance, though for the max oc, you'd need LN2. of course i dont think you meant that, you're better off getting the thermalrights or going water.

actually, the $20 freezer 7 pro keeps up just fine with the thermalrights on a QUAD. you may have different experiences with a 65w proccy, but the q6600 is a 105w proccy, and after oc'ing can easily reach 200w tdp. try having experience with something before you shove your fanboyism on others.
that is all.
thank you, and good night.

installation instructions for the lga775 socket. How high could I get my OC with that heatsink? Seems the norm has been anywhere from 3.5 - 3.7 with all types of heatsinks that I've seen from online reports.

people have been able to get 3.6-3.8 with the ultra, of course you'll be using the g0 stepping right? it runs cooler then the b3 stepping so that'll definently help.

as for my fanboyism.. do i look like a thermalright fanboy? honestly, im just trying to suggest the best air cooling solution, which has been proven over and over to be thermalright. thank you for understanding.

and all I'M saying is that for $45 less, he can get a lighter, smaller heatsink that will perform just as well, and all you've done is suggest the same heatsink in three seperate posts. i call that fanboyism.

Great....now I'm confused, and have no idea what g0 stepping is.

On the plus side that Antec case has a 50 dollar mail in rebate until the end of the month. :)

ok, the q6600 has two main steppings, the b3 and the g0. the b3 creates slightly more heat, and some will argue it doesn't overclock as well as the g0, but time and again that has been proven untrue, it will overclock just as far, but will run hotter.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm all up for the lower price for level performance.

the g0 is the newest stepping of the q6600, it runs cooler then the b3 stepping, which is the other main stepping. though they clock about the same, most people can get farther with the g0 on air cause of the less heat. are you ordering your q6600 from newegg?

Is there a certain version I need to buy to achieve g0 stepping, or is that achieved after purchase?

90% chance you'll get the g0. the b3 has been discontinued.

its a good performing case, but its notorious for cable management issues.

from what others have told me, it's an awesome case. the only complaint i've heard is that the power supply is on the bottom and that makes it tough to hide wires, but that's a minor issue.

Dont sell yourself short about the case...It is tough to manage the cables but after a couple of attempts and a dremmel I think I got it licked. Ill post a pic here in a sec.

here ya go....

Since I have no experience with managing cables it would be great to have a go to picture when I am ready. I'm guessing you use electrical tape?

no tape as my wires were wrapped when purchased. The electrical tape idea will work OK but two things need to be taken into concideration.

#1 dont wrap the wire too tight near the molex connections, as that may pull on the wires and loosen the connections themselves(may even pull the wire out of the molex)

#2 when using tape , after time the ends of the tape loosen and gets "flags" on the end where the tape has stopped.

If you feel like you are up to it there are kits out there to sheath your wires.

These are just one example....http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g35/c183/s283/list/p1/Cable_Sleeving-Sleeving_Kits-PSU_Sleeving_Kit-Page1.html

4 posts up is the inside pic of the 900 if you want the backside of the case( the uglyness) it will have to wait until tomarrow.

How many of the Case fans should I buy since the Antec has a possibility of four total I think?

sneekypeet
11-19-2007, 05:41 AM
there is only room for one additional fan and that is the 120mm in the door, as I posted b4 I dont see it as really necesary tho. Tha fans supplied in the case do a great job on their own!
