View Full Version : Yet Another New Build Thread

I recently discovered the Wish List feature on NewEggs site, I never noticed it before...it makes making new builds much easier to eventually pick from. Anyway the goal of this build is to be cheap, cool, quiet, and semi-powerful. I plan on doing some gaming, but nothing intense like Crysis. I think Oblivion and Bioshock would be the most intensive games I'd be playing.

I enabled sharing of this list, here is the link (https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.asp?ID=6708972) for it. Critiques are welcomed, I imagine some will tell me to get a different PSU, but I've used that specific one in three builds now and never had a problem, so for the price I'm pleased with it. My other PSU of choice is OCZ's Stealth Stream.

I plan on overclocking this system to 400FSB for a nice even 3.2GHz and 1-1 FSB-RAM ratio. I've also used this A-Data RAM in four builds now and its cheap and stable, it just doesn't overclock at all but I won't be OC'ing the RAM.

What'd I really like to get out of this thread is maybe a few tips to cutting the cost as much as possible. I decided to go with the 3870, I had a 8800GTX then sold it to buy a 8800GT. The GT performs well but is a little loud for my taste, and even the GT has more power than I need. I figure the new 3870 is the perfect level of performance I need for now, I also read its cool and most surprisingly of all...quiet! I've owned a couple ATI cards in the past and they were all ridiculously loud, specifically the 1800XT.

I thought of going with the 3850 but I'm just not feeling it, its too mid-range for my taste. So yeah, if anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them. I often make high end builds and then realize I never do anything or play any games that require that much power. I usually play FFXI, WoW, WC3 and a few other oldie but goodies. The latest games more often than not don't interest me, but I want to have enough computing power to at least play them on decent graphic levels. I play at a low resolution of 1360x768, so again I think the 3870 is good for me.

whoever said u could run crysis dx10 with the hd3870 was wrong unless they meant with medium settings and at a resolution of 1280x1024 or lower.my bro can only run crysis at 1440x900 at high with no aa or ap and it still only gets 26fps avg(he has a 8800GTX,e6850, and 4GB ddr667 ram)

now with crysis dx9 yea u can run it with no prob on a HD 3870 but y would u want to do that, if ur buildin a pc for gamin im pretty sure its to play the latest games with decnet to nice eye candy

i would recommend spendin about 40 bucks more for hte 8800GT. though it still can only run crysis as good as the gtx, no at max settings

Actually as I said in my first post, my last four builds have used all top of the line components. And never do I really play anything or do anything that needs these expensive parts. I don't plan on playing Crysis, just some older games, but as I said I want to have enough power to be able to try some new games. So Crysis on Medium would actually be alright to me to just try. If I ever found a new game I really got hooked too and it was graphics intensive, I'd probably just build a new rig at that point.

I build a new computer fairly often, I'd say every 4-8 months. So this one is just to hold me over until early next year when theres a whole new slew of goodies to spend more than I should on.

Just to make this more neat, I think I figured out how to link to the saved wish list. Does this link work? http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=6708972

That audio card you got there doesn't support hardware acceleration. The second cheapest - eXtreme gaming, does.

Actually I won't be using that sound card. I am keeping the CMI8788 chipset soundcard in my current system and selling my system now as it is but with the Creative sound card in it. I really like Optical Input for my Logitech Z-5500's. NewEgg doesn't have the same bgears sound card in stock right now and only has some $150+ soundcards with the same chipset.
