View Full Version : Which power supply should I get?

Well, despite my relatively slow system specs, I've decided to get a new case and power supply (no, I don't want anyone saying "spend the money on a new graphics card" ect thank you very much!).

Anyway, the case is the Antec P182 in gun metal (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126946/show_product_reviews) but I can't decide on a power supply.

I'd quite like a modular one, and although I'd like some headroom for upgrades I really don't see any reason to go over 600W in any case, so I'm looking more at the 400/500W region, and I'd like to get the PSU from ebuyer if possible to save on delivery. So, here's the options that I'm looking at for now, please give me recommendations on which to buy (or if you know a better one, let me know):

Hiper Type-R 580W (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/98562/show_product_reviews?offset=10&review_type=both&review_order_by=RLF)
Antec NEO 430W (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/99136)
Antec NEO 550W (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/99138)
Antec TruePower Trio 550W (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114931/show_product_reviews)
Corsair HX 520W (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114945)

I know, 550W is overkill for my system, but I want it to be dead stable, long lasting, from a manufacturer I know and trust and it needs to be under £60 really - plus it can't be too big because space around the PSU in that area is limited... and because of the unusual layout it needs to have fairly long cables to reach my CD/DVD drives. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Hiper PSU, as I've heard of ASUS users (like myself) having issues with the Antec NEO PSUs (see here (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=970367&page=1&pp=20)), but obviously Antec is a very reputable brand and you'd hope their power supplies have been designed to allow for any unusual layouts in their cases, such as the one in question. As I've only ever bough budget PSUs and this is my first decent one, I'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks for any help, Jimmy

Edit: and it needs to be nice and quiet :)

Edit2: so far the Corsair HX series has been strongly recommended, so I've added that.

I use the Corsair modular power supplies myself and i think they are very good. Have a look on dabs.com or komplett. I got the 620W one and have never looked back. :rockout:

I would get the 520HX or 620HX from Corsair. Best power supply there is thats modular imo.

I agree with my two friends above. The Corsair are top notch psu and in your price range. Not to mention, they have a 500W and 600W that is a little cheaper than the 620W. Definitely worth checking out.

You mean this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114945) I assume? That's just about in my price range, the 620W version isn't but I don't even need 400W TBH. Thanks for the advice so far, more comments are welcome of course.

Edit: this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129949) Seasonic is another possibility, any comments about that?

Edit: forget the Seasonic, it isn't modular!

Thanks for all the tips guys, so far I'm most tempted by the Corsair HX 520W, because it has good reviews, strong recommendations, nice long cables and a five year guarantee. I'm still open to suggestions of course.

lol didn't notice we were over the pond :p and now that I've realized that, you may actually be better off with the corsair 520 with the extra warranty (seasonic gives 5 yrs over here)

seasonic also makes corsairs psus, or at least they were making them. Either is good but that 520HX is a steal my friend.

I would only buy antec's high end psus anymore...such as the true power quattros (refer to my system specs :))

VX 550 from corsair. Cheaper than the HX 520, a better 12v rail and better efficiency.

forgot to mention on my first post... the corsair PSU gives u a velcro bag with extra cables in it and u can store ur unused one in it, black little cables ties for cable tidy and managament and a little corsair sticker for your PC. It was the sticker that won me over!!!

Honestly Jimmy you wont go wrong with the corsair one, i have read all the reviews about it before i got them in for peoples PC's and i am well impressed with it. No issues with it on the rails either. :rockout::toast:

Thanks for all the help, it's greatly appreciated :toast:

As I definitely want a modular PSU and as most people seem to think the HX is the best, I'm going to go with the 520W version of that - I'll order it later :)
