View Full Version : Thinking about XP PRO x64
How's the OS? Good? Bad? Is it faster than x32? My one concern other than that is I don't think there are any x64 drivers for my sound card. Will x32 ones work?

Hat this has been talked about SOOO many times here on TPU. Myself and a few others being major supporters of the OS. Try a search, I think you'll like what you find. ;)

there should be 64 bit driver for your sound card, check creative website.
I'm happy win XP64, even more stable than XP32, some apps don't work, but it was relatively rare for me.
Is it relatively faster than x32? Will, say, F@H be faster? I really don't wanna reformat if it's not all that great.

i think that XP64 is discontinued in favor of vista64.
i would rather wait with xp32 ,untill vista64 penetrates pc market a little more..

xp64 is built a few years ago and how many user it got. 4?

I dont think your going to see much improvement.
And like Machak said above, Vista 64 seems to be the better route (at least in terms of support/drivers)
I have no intention of using Vista anytime soon.
So I won't see much of an imrpovement, I guess I'll stay here (xp x32)
No harm in trying. I figure I'll go for it. I got my drivers togeather.

A hell of a lot more than that. xp32 is SHITE compared to xp64. Please do your research before you slam an OS.
Hat dude. I know for a fact that there are drivers for your soundcard and welcome to the club dude :)
Yeah, I found it. Among all my other programs. Got them on my USB thumb drive. Just waiting for the OS to... get here... ;)

X86 programs aren't a problem thanks to the SysWow64 emulator, it's just the drivers that must be x64, and compared to when it first came out driver issues are now limited to legacy hardware, webcam, scanners and printers.

i didnt slam it:) i have read it about in a magazine.todays market doesnt need 64 bits, look at conroe procs-they are optimized for 32bits(for now). if xp64 is better why are u talking about EMULATOR?? lol dude..

You need a 64-bit software firewall (if you use one) and your AV needs to be x64. AVG Free is x64 now. Nod32, Avast, and a couple others I cant recall atm are now too.
The emulator in XP x64 and Vista x64 are for the apps that are 32-bit. This is why there are two install directories. Program Files (x86) (for 32-bit programs) and Program Files (for x64 programs).
I got the disc now, all I gotta do is reboot and I'm installing.
Well, I got my dirvers installed, re-configured (for the most part). All I gotta do now is get some games back on there and finish updating Windows (doing that now).
Even now before really tweaking it seems so fast... it feels like my computer woke up :)

Do all updating first dude. Get all the basics on. Then benchmark the bugger, then put games on :D

Try it before you make claims about it. XP x64 is built on the Server 2003 kernel. Fast and stable. In fact, it IS Server 2003, with all the server stuff removed, and already set up as a workstation. It works really well on AMD machines. By far my current favorite Windows OS.

I think you just proved you don't know what you are talking about in this regard.
The reason for the emulator (called SysWOW64) is so you can run 32 bit applications in a 64 bit environment. All MS's 64-bit OS's use it and there is absolutely NO performance impact, in fact, in virtually all games I get better performance than I did on XP 32-bit.
Also, as Wile E said, it's built on the Server 2k3 kernel, which if you paid any attention to the building of Vista you will know that they used that as a starting point.
I've used all of Microsoft's OS's, and out of them all this is the best desktop OS currently. Until you've actually tried it you can't claim to know if it's good or bad.
