I just had a X1800XL shipped to me and it is showing up as a X1800XT with 512MB of ram. I was told it had the X1800XT BIOS but that it had no heating up issues...wrong. This thing is getting artifacts like crazy every 15 minutes or so. I need to flash this thing back to a regular X1800XL to see if this will correct the problem. Please help.

On a side note how can I be sure if this thing is the X1800XL with 256MB of ram or 512MB of ram, isn't it possible the X1800XT BIOS could be reporting the incorrect amount of ram?

You will need to know BRAND, and also maybe the type or memory chips(IC's) used.

If in fact you need the type of IC's you may need to remove the cooler to see the RAM chips themselves. If this is needed , manke sure you have extra thermal compound on hand for when you reseat the cooler.

Also if you have to remove the cooler read the RAM IC's for size and multiply times the # of chips, this will tell you how much RAM is on the card for sure!

Make sure you flash with the correct bios....If unsure of make and whatnot , download ATITool or GPU-z and see what info it gives you!

Won't those tools just give me existing BIOS information?

UPDATE: Also thank you for your quick response this is a really sucky situation )-:

UPDATE: Okay this is what GPU-Z is reporting...

The actual card has RUBY on the cooler so I am pretty sure that makes it an official ATI card but it also has a small MSI sticker on it but it looks like it may have been added after the fact. I would prefer to avoid pulling the card apart.

Nice catch...you are correct there. I guess the only wat to really know is to check the stickers on the PCB ( if they ae there) and reference google to see what the part# leads too.

That really sucks, I think I am just gonna have to send it back...shoot. Thanks for your help. I thought about slowing down the clock speeds via ATI TOOL but running ATI TOOL makes the video go bye bye )-:

UPDATE: I can actually see a X1800XL sticker that indicates it is a 512MB Card...unless that was faked...can't see much reason for that...would have been easier to just pull a sticker off and leave it naked then put one on it.
