ecc memory

i have been looking to upgrade my memory to dual channel 512 x 2. i have two pc3200 socket and have seen a deal for some ecc registered memory. i think it stands for error checking control, anyway is there a catch to ecc? will it work on my nforce4 mainboard? and if not will ecc memory work on a non ecc board?
