A friend of mine wants to update his sons (11year old ) computer for Christmas , his machine is agp !! so what card should me get ? i think the agp x1950 pro might be a little expensive and me would have to change his psu.

so what should i tell him to get ? a ati hd2600 or x1650 or a 7600 ?

any others worth considering ?

I can honestly say that it's not worth it to upgrade AGP systems any more. But if you want to go through the trouble, any of the cards you listed should work. But since I have no idea what kind of psu is currently in the computer, and I don't know what the computer is being used for, I can't really give you any video card recommendations.

The 2600 is good, the HIS X1950XT is good as well as the X1950 pro.

as its a standard off the shelf computer i would imagine it to be 350 - 450 watt.

If I'm not mistaken the 2600 eats less power. Plus it's the newest card.

I was thinking about a 2600 as its about £60 in the uk

but will it be able to play modern games ? not bothered about max resolutions or playing crysis etc

Oh i forgot to mention its running windows xp

i could put vista on for him but i dont see the point as its just a basic gaming machine.

either a 2600xt or a 7600GT... both cards will play all the games at a decent framerate... even crysis.. What cpu/ram/etc has he got?? The reason I ask, is there is not point buying a 7600gt gfx card if he only 256mb ram... :p

the 2600 should be perfect for your application.

it supports all the newest stuff for games and should play them reasonably well

he only has 256mb but i plan to take that to 768 or 1mb depending on what he wants to spend ,
i will find out later this week when i get the pc from him.

from experience i would say get an X1650pro AGP. I had that as an AGP and it was awesome! ATM i have a 2600XT PciEx and I actually think my old x1650 was better....or at least similar. Also consider the directx10 support of the 2600 and the power consumption of the 1650. I think a 1950 is a bit overboard for AGP. :P

Good luck!

If you want to upgrade an existing system that you are happy with, go for the AGP HD2600. Although the X1950XT is much faster, at that investment, its time to think about a new PC.

The HD2600 is cheap, and powerful enough to run all the current games... albeit not at the highest resolution... but good enough to enjoy the game. An 11 year old would be more than happy with that.

(It seems to me that a lot of comments are made hear by people NOT reading your post, about purpose. Twits)

FYI, I have the REVERSE issue, which is I'm happy with my AGP GPU... but need a little more horsepower. So i'm upgrading to Quad core 2, but keeping my AGP card.

You really would want 1 Gb to game. Also, what about the cpu? No point in matching up a hd2600 to a p3 450 mhz.

I agree.
What is the CPU?
No point in buy an HD2600XT if your'e not ever going to be using it's fully potential.
Might even be able to get away with buying something cheaper.
I'd recommend a 7600GT as bare minimum.

I know if I had a computer 11 years ago it wouldn't have but a AGP 1X slot and a pentium 2 or less CPU and couldn't run anymore than 128 MB PC100 or less memory with a 150 Watt PSU? I'd go with an entire computer upgrade.

I don't think it will be that old ! maybe 4 years but i will have it on thursday & i will know what is in it & what can be done with iy but its all down to how much cash they want to spend , i think it will be a Christmas present.

if it was up to me i would upgrade the lot but its not.

11 years ago a 450 watt psu was equal to using a 1200 watt today.

he has a 250 watt psu if its 11 yrs old, back then thats the biggest they used and its probably 1ghz or less cpu.

please give us some specs when you have them or at least a year made, name brand and model number
