I guess. It really depends on what the computer's gonna be used for. If she's gonna use Vista at any time, then go for it. But if she doesn't really use her computer for anything but surfing the web, then buy her a cookbook instead.

lol no i put vista in for her but the 7000 cant see areo glass (as if thats a big deal...)

its a little bit more expensive but hey it gives you more than 2400 :)
and yes even radeon 9600 owns radeon 7000 :P

Well, if she's sixty and not gaming, integrated graphics should be fine. That UVD decoder is going to come in handy every time she watches a movie. And of course, the desktop image quality is SUPERB.

If she is gaming, though, you shoulda checked www.newegg.com to see if you could have picked up a 2600XT ;).

If you discover that your mother has an analog (D-SUB) cable for her monitor, you should get a VGA that has an analog port on it (otherwise, the adapter will become loose on it's own one day and you'll wonder why there's no picture...one of the main reasons I sold my HD 2600XT). On a side note, my GeForce 6200, with the D-SUB port, is $30 shipped to your front door if you live in the ConUSA :D.

Is a 2400 better than a Radeon 7000? Considering theres like a 10 year gap between the two............................................. somebody take this before I uncontrollably start bashing my head against a brick wall until it bleeds before eventually exploding in a mass of flesh, blood, bone and brain matter.

No matter how awesome it would be to see your head explode... the lady is 60. I say grab an 8800GT. But since it's AGP... then it's gotta be a X1950 Pro! Overkill FTW!

abit of a silly question really... like 3 gens of cards from a dx8.1 to dx10 even though in the real world today a 2400 is a bottem of the pit but you will notice a difference a big one

Good choice. You could have gotten away with a lesser card, but that one will serve you well. For the price, you just added alot more worth to that computer. I just hope you got a agp card, not pci-e, and that her motherboard supports at least agp4x.

The rest of you come on? Can you even read the entire OP? She is 60 years old, on a computer that is the same age as a 7000. She will not be gaming much, but she may be watching movies. Back off the guy and relax.

Actually only the 7000 card is old (well its not old she only bought it 9 months ago!! she was conned by her local pc shop) the rest of her machine is only 6 months old with my old 939 cpu (amd fx 60) so its not slow by any means & it has a 550 watt psu with 2 gig of ram (400mhz)

this machine of hers also dual boots into xp or vista (i know cause i put it together after i gave her into trouble for going to the local pc shop !!! lol )

Haha that's a pretty awesome setup for a grandmother... but if this is for movies and stuff, I doubt she'll be watching any BR or HDDVD movies, so really anything will work.

lol no the pc shop put an x2 3600 in which i got rid of ! the fx 60 came later !! when i wanted a c2d.

i asked the question as the hd 2400 has had a pasting on here!! as low end cards are always compared to the high end ones.

I have just bought my mum a radeon hd2400 for Christmas to replace her radeon 7000 agp
i know both cards are shit but i could not find anything else !! (she is 60 by the way)
no gaming of any sorts!!

was this wise ?

I have had real trouble with the hd2400 driver installing in xp & vista.
the driver that comes with it is six months old and is not recognized by ccc & the 7.12 driver is not recognized ?

Any idea what driver to use ?

The Radeon 7000 is Basically the Radeon VE, In that it has no Pixel or Vertex Shading, and no TnL in order to cost reduce.
But... One feature it -does- have is the Hardware Accellerated DVD playback capability's, and the chance it could be modded into a Radeon 7200 or a 7500.
Still, good choice!
I built my granny's computer, and it has an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2gb of ram and SLI Geforce 6600's. (And all she does is write letters...).
So... Performance differences? Its like comparing a Geforce 8800 Ultra with a Geforce 6100. - Its not happening.

it is but in terms of speed the C2D kills the P3 by about the same margin as the 7000 and they have about the same time gap

If she isn't gaming, and is using something like Windows XP, you should've stuck with the Radeon 7000. If she's going to use Windows Vista, you've done the right thing as the card complies with the Shader Model 2 requirement for the Aero user interface. The Aero would make life a little easier for her.

Her machine is dual boot xp & vista & the idea is for her to move to vista completely.

remember no games just cosmetic & the internet only.

Okay, make the switch to Vista, enable the Aero UI. At least your HD2400 helps her do everything she wants with Vista. The HD2400 can play HD video with ease and makes her photos look better than ever ATI at least has the best image quality IMO. What would a 60 yr old mom want anyway but better communication, photos, videos, online cookery? :)

the only 2 agp dx10 cards are the hd2400 & hd2600 which are 10 times better than what you had

best drivers for the hd2400 are omega 7.12 for xp and 7.7 for vista.

Do not make a fool of yourself. Have you not got a Sapphire Card? Oh that was the one that you fitted before was it not and had to rebuild your comp my old one and the one I have now. It blew your comp up and mine !!!!
A decent graphics card that would suffice and would have cost around £70
At leat what I had was cheap and nasty BUT it worked . This doesnt .
PS Jamupnorth fool I am for letting you near my computer . There is a difference between £32 and £500. so dont tell me there is no price inbeteen reliability? sucks
