Just a small question - I'm replacing my 8600GTS with an 8800GT. Can I use the same wire which I've been using with my 8600 for the GT? (It would save me some cutting and re-tidying wiring)
If you see here they seem identical:

Yes, they are the same adapter cable. :toast:

Of course, they are both incarnations of the 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-E adaptor and therefore are both rated to supply the stock 75W to the card.....no worries.

If I had the time, I would cut off one molex connector and solder the pins to the other one, thus saving a molex connector. I'm pretty sure the power supply can't tell the difference as to which connector is pulling power, since it all comes from the same place.

That would be an incredibly stupid idea. The reason for two molex plugs is so that you do not overload the lead with other devices. I have seen people do what you say, then power every molex device with that same molex lead. This in turn overloaded the lead, and melted the power circuitry of every device on that lead.
The whole point of two connectors is to limit the amount of devices someone may use on that lead. Do not wire them together.

On my psu,i took off the end molex from one of the strings of molex connectors, and put a 6 pin pci-e power plug on it.It is NOT used to power anything else though, the lead comes straight from the psu to the graphics card, with nothing else connected to it.

Does your psu not have a pci-e cable?
I'm not that concerned about yours anyway tigger, the 8800's draw alot more power than a 1950pro.
