okay, so i went into safe mode on my xp pro sp2 to fix my overloaded hdd, which was successful, but now i have a new problem. i rebooted, was loading windows, got the loading screen, and right before it pulled up the user select thing, my monitor says: "out of scan range" or something like that. so basically heres what i think, going into safe mode triggered something in the ati driver (i've got a sapphire x1950pro 256 mb) and now its set up settings that my monitor cant display,. sadly monitor only supports 1024 x 768,

so my question is: how do i fix the drivers and all so that i can go back into regular windows? i'm in "safe mode with networking" atm

prob your best bet would be to use the ATI software uninstaller and then reinstall the display drivers

depending on what you had to do to your HDD, you might have accidentally had something get deleted, or the driver files became fragmented.

that's a good idea, too. Damn, dude, how maxed out did you have the HDD to have to go into safe mode to clean up space?! :twitch:

@Pancho,

You can also set the default resolution and vertical refresh directly in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG->System->CurrentControlSet->Control->VIDEO
Find the entry for you card its a long number.
Under that should be a Key named "0000"

The three settings to look for are;

DefaultSettings.VRefresh (should be a value like 75 or 60. Corresponds to freq.)
DefaultSettings.XResolution (something like 1024 or whatever your x res was set to)
DefaultSettings.YResolution (something like 768 or whatever your y res was set to)

Normal warning apply when dinking with the registry.

well i uninstalled just the driver from safe mode, and its fine now, though something that windows did the day before yesterday(wasn't on yesterday) that i found inexplicably strange: on the user select screen, it got rid of my account(which was admin) and opened a new one called administrator, and the pass to the administrator account turned out to be the password to windows(like the one you set during the installer and all)

I'm not sure how much of a difference that might make . . . but, if WIN was logged as having your account, and an admin account (even though you might not have seen it), the set display properties for the admin account might have been different . . . I've had similar account problems on my XP setup, even though I have the only account on this XP install :wtf:

i still dont get why the accounts were messed up and everything, and the administrator account is blank, i have to access all my stuff the long way by going to docs and settings, etc. etc.

@ imperial, well its not very hard to overload an hdd in my situation(see the attached pic)

speaking of attached pic, the ati driver files seem to take up half of the fragmented files list...
