I don't think it's an over-reaction. If he announces something like that, it should be taken seriously. It would be an over-reaction to blame COD 4 for it ;)

WOW. Yo people just open your eyes. Under this administration you live in a neo-fascist regime. How can you say that this is ok? What about freedom of speech? The guy was obviously kidding. It just makes me sad that you people don't realize how shitty this really is. The police is listening to in-game chatting? Come on...

Freedom of speech is one thing....
Saying I'm going to harm countless numbers of people is not practicing that ideal. IMO

no one can be sure if he was actually kidding. what if he wasn't and he wasn't arrested then you here another columbine like or viginia tech like story the next day or so? its better to be safe than sorry.
it is alarming though that they arelistening to what we say on live. wonder how much money these ppl get for sitting there listening to a game.

The police were not listening, other gamers were. Someone who lives nearby was probably playing in the same server and overheard what he said, then reported it.

I cant stand it when people yell into their microphones. Thats why I never use one.
I don't even think that's overreacting at all, in lieu of all the shootings lately pretty much everything needs to be taken seriously to a degree. Plus why the hell would you be talking about that online?
I thought it was a "i'm gonna kill you" threat to a fellow gamer. That would be overreacting IMO, but not this.

omg... right.. so yelling im gonna kill you, in a game where, guess what, you kill each other, means that the guy is gonna trace ur ip, track you down, travel over, murder you and then what?
over reaction is an understatement...
all the killings in the news have been pretty silent, not obviously provoked and out of the blue

The guy didnt't just say "I'm going to kill you" in a game where you kill each other ...
According to court records, Shaw was playing the game “Call for Duty 4” in the XBOX Live gaming system with players around the country when he allegedly stated the threat of “shooting up the school.” The statement reportedly contained a description from Shaw concerning “how he was going to do it.”
Unless there is a school on the map he was playing, I would take this seriously too.

with whats been goin on lately with kids shooting up places i dont think it was wrong to over react a kid just shot up 8 people in a mall..so even if he was kidding i think that was dumb on his part fully knowing whats been going on with school shootings and other places that involve mass amounts of people

did he state which school? where he was from? was it directed at any players in particular?
no different from getting pwned by a french guy and saying im gonna nuke the fek outa france.. or something to that effect. fair enuff, bad taste in terms of wording with what has been in the media lately, but again, it was said, like many things, many threats, and no proof of intent, just a guy bullshitting
edit: still a dumbass reguardless, maybe a ban from xbox live for a few months would have told him not to be so stupid

No, but "llieu Shaw, a 19 year old college student at Frostburg State University in Maryland" should raise a few eyebrows.

Yes, people do it all the time. But if you don't question it immediately, when do you?

My eyes are open, freedom of speech does NOT give you the right to threaten people.
What's shitty is some guy getting so wound up over a GAME that he actually threatens to kill someone.

Anyone dumb enough to make a threat like that online deserves to be under a watchful eye. It was a completely non-game related threat, and it needed to be taken seriously.
I dont care what rights you think you have as a human (or an American citizen), but when shit like that comes out of your mouth, you're basically pissing them away.

granted this situation was some what appropriate . . . although, where do we draw the line with these types of government reactions? We all know younger kids (think: high school and/or middle school) make these same kinds of threats every day (how many times did your HS or MS have a bomb threat in a year?) . . . so, should we permit local governments to react to an adolescents threats the same as they do an adult? But, waitaminute,! then we start getting into privacy infringement laws and it gets completely screwy from there. Or, what if you piss someone off and they decide to call up local police and say you were making threats about going off Predator-style somewhere?
Either way - I think the response to the so called threats was a bit much. An investigation woulda been alright, but not going to that extent which they did.
If dude did make those threats, even just joking around, there should be some form of punishment - not so much that I think what he did was wrong (cause how many of us here actually think about what we're saying/typing in the heat of a game?), but because other people are panicky and overreact.
If he said those thing intentionally, as in that he planned on doing it - or just to 'scare' others - full weight of the book, IMO.

I can understand some people being a bit on edge with the shootings etc over there in the US.
You have some serious crazy people overthere.
If he said what he did online over here we would just take the piss out of them and thats about it.
Violent games has been under fire currently as it's the new and latest thing to complain about.

OVER-REACTION
What more can I say?I often play in American CS:S servers and the dudes there do burst out nasty.
"You Fn Indian I'll r*** ur m**"
Thing is I'm not very sensitive to all this. My job is to deliver headshots with clinical precision and I do it. Besides I use a JAP....the anonymity proxy and I have a false IP. :p
C'mon guys it's just a game. Learn from your Soccer team which lost to Ghana in the FIFA WC. They were at least a lot more gentlemanly....seriously.
Woah Mama!

I don't think it is an over-reaction. The US is infamous for having people announce over the internet (said) plans to massacre (certain/their) highschool with (family members) gun/rifle.
If you are such a lunatic eThug to threaten peoples lives over the internet you should at least be arrested for being completely f-ing stupid and belligerent.
Serves the dipshit right, less spam for the CoD servers.

No offense to you, but you once you threaten at least one person's life you lose that right. This is obviously not an over-reaction, I think the idiot should be in prison for a good 5 years for this.

Yeah...except people say they are going to kill each other (outside of game) every day. I have been in servers where people plan a time to meet. Their were two people arguing about 911 and Hitler (yaeh...not the most productive conversation) who decided to meet at Ground Zero last year. One of them is still in games so im quite sure nither of them killed the other although I never asked him about it.

Neo-fascist regime,..what a slap in the face to people who had to endure real fascism like WW2 Italy an such. Kills me,..people hear this BS on TV and then they adopt it in everyday speech.
But of course,..BUSH is SATIN/HITLER I almost forgot.
