Merriam-Webster Dictionary Declares 'w00t' Word of 2007

As a sign of how much internet slang has impacted real-world communication, the prestigious Merriam-Webster dictionary has slapped the title "Word of 2007" on the popular internet slang term "w00t". Spelled with a variable number of W's, 0's, o's, t's, and occasionally z's and 1's, w00t is now officially defined as “expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay."” The word of the year is currently being worked into an upcoming revision of the dictionary.

Runners up for Word of 2007 include facebook, conundrum, quixotic, blamestorm, sardoodledom, apathetic, Pecksniffian, hypocrite and charlatan.

PS. It's not right to say that w00t is derived from "we owned the other team". That term has come as an acronym that post-fits the word. "w00t" comes from 'whoot', is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh, and is also the sound of a brass horn at the end of a (historical) battle, or modern sports match.

Why has MW got it so wrong? Because people that write dictonaries live in libraries, are a bit nerdy, and dont go out much. :roll:

I never heard that.. I thought the word woot came from D&D as a faster way to say Wondrous Loot... And then it was used as "win over other team" in Counter Strike as it was one of the popular FPS games back in the day..

How out of date are you? I can remember people saying woot ever since Duke Nukem 3D Online on Kali in the mid 90s.

if it ain't in the Oxford dictionary it isn't a real word,just take the Oxford as the only true dictionary of the English language.? How did words become real words in the pre-oxford dictionary days? Words become words by people using the word, while retaining a common meaning. Woot is as much of a word as is 'hurray'.

1) An Expression of joy generally used by computer gamers and hackers.
2) An exclamation of victory or triumph over an obstacle such as winning a large prize at a LAN party.
3) A part of the 1337 language.

History: The current-day use of the word w00t stems from hackers in the early to mid 80's. While communicating with each other groups of hackers such as Razor1911 would need lingo which nobody else would be able to understand to express milestones in their hacking. One such milestone was gaining root access, but the term rooted or "gained root access" was easily understood so the term was changed to w00t to help disguise. Because of the difficulty of "rooting" many times the term w00t would be much in a celebratory tone. It later evolved to simply be a celebratory remark rather than a hacking milestone.
