Ok so I have a delima here, I want to overclock my CPU, basicly get a faster CPU, so I figure their are a few option out there for me. I have about $130 here to spend so this is what I see me doing to solve my overclocking issue.
I can...
A. Get a processor, because maybe the one I have right now is just at its limit.
B. Get a new motherboard, because maybe my motherboard is what is preventing me from overclocking further.
Or C. Mybe my processor is not overclocking more because it just gets to hot and so If I bought a stand alone water cooler for it I could raise the voltage and not worry about it blowing up.
So now that yall see my options what should I do. I was thinking about buying the AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Black editon, but then thought what if its my motherboard low FSB that won't allow my CPU to overclock more. Now when I say "won't overclock more" I mean its just not stable no matter what I do.
So now that you have read my delima, what would you do, what would you recommend I do.
Thanks in advance.:)

2.9 isnt a bad overclock and from ive seen the best overclock you can get on amd on average is arround 3.2-3.4 no matter what the chip so id sell your mobo cpu and go for a intel solution
The 5000+ has an unlocked multi, even if your FSB is maxing out, you can just use any multi you want.

Im sorry I only have $130 to spend, and plus no matter how bad AMD does, I will always buy their products, Unless I fell like getting the best of the best, then(at least for now) I would go Intel.
And to the person above this post, Can increase the multiplyer be capped by anything and which is better more FSB or higher Multiplyer.
Thanks for the responses guys:toast:

Well, the higher multi does not guarantee you a higher OC, but it should help if you are FSB limited.

if you have to stay with amd i would just stay with what you have otherwise you going to pay over the odds for a 300 to 500mhz increase, if you feel like you have to upgrade get more ram or a better hard disk maybe??
just im in a similar situation im not sure spending money for a little increase is worth it,if i had a ddr2 memory id jump on to the q6600 or other cheap c2d that overclock well!!

Well, I for one don't consider the need for 4 cores from any company yet so upping my dual core overclock without a system change has made me buy a 5000+ over my current 4800+ (the 4800+ hits a massive brick wall @ 2.91Ghz). For me, it is worth the extra 300MHz+ to buy one, especially considering that after I sell the 4800+ I only have to pay $50 for that nice unlocked Multi. Nothing makes use of 4 cores yet except business/graphics apps. Even Crysis with it's multi core support cannot push a Quad anywhere near it's limits. We are all GPU limited there. I'd say go for it if you got the cash.

You have a nice machine I dont really think you can do much else to it without spending some major cash. The only thing I would do that will give you a performance boost is to get either another HD of the same make and RAID 0 it, or get 2 WD Raptors 36Gbs and RAID them and use the 200gb for a datadrive.

Otherwise you have a good system and there really isnt much else you can do to it at least for under 200.00.

Or if your fingers get so itchy you just have to spend the money, I would probably go for the Brisbane 65nm 5200+, it stocks at 2.7Gig, should get you to at least 3.2Gig on sensible voltages and is within your price bracket:

If you gett a new cpu get a black edition.

They come with 2x1mbs of cache and can hit 3.6+ghz.

Tanks guys for the input and complements, analyzing peoples thoughts and opinons right now. This is why I am so glad to have yall's help with just a click a way:)
Right now I'm thinking about one of the two CPU's mintioned above or posible a bigger HD, unless anyone can confirm that more RAM will improve my performance, I think 2GB is adequate for now.:)

Hey do you know how far that CPU can Overclock on air, looks intreasting, the thing that concerns me though is that its volts don't go that high.

a 10% increase in cpu speed isnt even noticeable except in the odd benchmark.. if u want to stay amd and go over the magic 3 gig mark get the black edition 5000 with its unlocked multiplier..
if u want a real performance increase u are gonna have to go intel.. that will cost money thow..

When you say"it" do you mean your mobo? That chip is a lotta bang for buck and whilst Trog is right, the odd 100Mhz isnt really noticeable, the odd 300 is! ;)

They come with 2x1mbs of cache and can hit 3.6+ghz.Mine doesn't. :( But I think it's only because it gets too hot. I post no probs at 3.6, but it bombs out just before getting to the desktop. My poor AC Freezer64 can't keep up. Need to get my water up and running again.
