network card and router

i need to get a wireless card and a router any suggestions something that wont break the bank i will only be doing some light online gaming, thats is what my desktop is for :)

For gaming go wired. Really. Pull out every trick to get a wired connection.

If not, get a second hand "enterprise" access station, like Netgear ProSafe WG102/WAG102. Avoid an all-in-one router/modem/wireless. The same little CPU is having to handle it all and it is more likely to lag or go down or have limited QoS features.

Forget WEP and other security. It just slows you and the router down. Use "MAC serial access control". Who cares if someone can "snoop" your games data-stream. Worthless info. And with the MAC serial access control, no one else can connect.

I use Belkin wireless G equipment and it works great - plus they offer a lifetime guarantee. They're pretty good value too AFAIK, not too expensive anyway. I strongly recommend that you don't use the built in Windows Wireless Zero software and use whatever software the manufacturer gives you because I found that the Windows software caused ping spikes which would ruin gaming on an otherwise perfect connection.

My Belkin wireless gear adds 1ms to ping times, so hardly something noticeable. I've heard good things about netgear too, although Linksys seem to be off the ball a bit recently from what I've read, and I've had bad experiences with both them and D-Link. I would definitely recommend getting both wireless card and router from the same company whatever you do though.

But that's just based on personal experience, I'm sure other people would put that list the other way up.

how much does the belkin stuff run ive heard nothing but good reviews about them so i think that is what i may go with
