Anyone else hear that you could overclock the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor to 3.0 ghz with it staying pretty dam cool. I'm going to be upgrading pretty soon here and I dont want to go from AMD to INTEL but if this is true and the price is right well .....

Well, my Q6600 GO clocks to 3.7ghz stable and cool...and it's for sale:D
3.6 is quite achieveable with a G0

I'm not sure if that's intended to be a smart remark or not, but you should look into some of Arctic Cooling, Zalman, Thermalright, or any other known brands for a CPU cooler.

not trying to be smart not to clued in to cpu cooling just tend to use stock items.:respect:

Well just as a general rule it's best not to push any part on stock cooling. Try looking into the Zalman CNPS 9700 or something similar.

On a budget, go with a AC Freezer 7 Pro. If you have more to work with, get a Zerotherm Nirvana or Enzotech Ultra-X.

hell, even a b3 will clock to 3.6, just be a little warmer than the g0 at the same speed.

Of course it can. Check the "4 GHz on the air club" run by Tatty_one and see for yourself. BTW mines chugging along peacefully at 3.00 GHz with 40~60 C (not bad)

B3. methinks it's from one of the older production batches

You should try lapping it. I did on mine and it made a big difference and I gotta say it was super easy. First time I ever lapped a cpu, done many heatsinks so was a little concerned about the CPU, but with no pins on the back of the chip really nothing to worry about.
The difference was between running at 3.8 or 4.0 and staying under 1.55 volts.

me too. Random and I have the same coolers unlike ZZZ, with a luxurious liquid block. At 3.00 GHz and 14C room temp, I feel my B3 is going hot (45~65). I'm a n00b at lapping. Gimme a tutorial's link please

From what I know you can do this to any CPU that has the Grey Ceramic IHS. And they all come like that now, I think the last CPU that didnt have them were the Athlon Line. And most mobiles still come with no IHS.
This is a lot safer to do then removing the IHS with an exacto knife...But of course as with any mod it isn't 100% safe. Although i think it would be pretty hard to mess up a lap on the cpu.
Also yeah, totally voids the warranty, I mean I think they would notice. LOL

a lot of processor's metal caps are soldered onto the die now anyway, so rmoving it can be fatal to your proccy.

From an old burned out mobo,I took the ZIF socket and I managed get the CPU and the socket stay with a burned of 754 one. Then I tried lapping.Well it went well without bending the pins.:rockout: But lapping sucked a bit.:D

is this thread for real? it's pretty obvious that the q6600 can get to 3.6ghz no problem. 99% of them can. another 60% of q6600's can hit 4ghz no problem and 35% can hit 4.4ghz.
as in any overclocking situation, it is advisable to get better cooling than the stock cooler.

It is real. There are two revisions of the Q6600. The g0 chips OC better and go upto 4 and beyond...with ofcourse serious cooling while lesser mortals like me using the older B3 and using a CNPS 9700 can only hit 3.5 :(

Why even a X38 can take you that far. You don't need a 780i. There's a X38 from Foxconn. methinks it has lot of toys in its BIOS

once you've past the 3ghz mark on the q6600 G0 you'll never go back. these things are tanks and can pretty much plow their way through any program you throw at them. especially at higher clocks.
i saw a huge improvement over 3ghz in 3dmark06 when running my quad at 3.6ghz.
BUT...i will say, i can't wait for my yorkfield.

x38 is nice, but 975x is still pretty appealing. who really NEEDS all the bs options x38 has? overclockability isn't increased because of those options, they're just "features."

FULLY? They don't even remotely support SLI. NVidia has something called "integrity" When Intel played foul by modifying their YF chips not to work with 680i (because NV refused to license SLI to them) NV took just two months to roll out a 780i, just a chipset change with the board design being 90% same. I love NV!

4.5Ghz? You didn't hit it easy....you have TEC cooling, very nice! I would love to see a screen shot of your system at 4.5Ghz with a SuperPi 1M and 3dmark06 shot. On water the furthest I can push it is 4.2Ghz and the temps and voltages are not what I would consider a daily use machine.
