This is my first post, sorry if I posted this thread is in the wrong forum. I'm looking to get a new PC and saw a great package deal on a Gateway GT5622. This has the E2160 processor which appears to be awesome for OC'ing.

I've OC'd processors/vid cards in the past so I know how to do it... I'm just unsure about this particular package. Will the motherboard allow the E2160 to be OC'd (up to 3GHz+)?

Thanks in advance to anyone familiar with this machine!

Mike

Most Overclocking options will either be locked in the BIOS or do not exist in the BIOS. Some Gateways have mild overclocking options but nothing realy good.
You can always take a chance of getting the BIOS modded or replacing the BIOS with the retail version for that Mobo. No guarantees it will work though, and might damage the mobo.

Thanks for the reply Namslas90. I realize the BIOS dictates, I was hoping someone had experience with this specific Gateway model (GT5622), and could tell me if it's possible to easily increase the bus speed from probably 200MHz to over 300MHz.

I wouldn't mod or replace the BIOS. The E2160 caught my eye because it OC's big time with no extra cooling. If I could do that with this machine, it would be worth the price (and no hassle!).

Thanks again!

Give this a try if you've got a locked BIOS (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=25716)

Thanks theonetruewill. That's a long thread (35 pages!). I don't know if the BIOS is locked or not (I haven't bought the computer yet... I'm waiting to see how easily it can be OC'd). My question basically is: can the bus speed be changed in the BIOS by 100MHz or more (to take advantage of the E2160)? I think someone would need to have experience with this particular computer to answer that question... I don't think you can find that info on a website.

Thanks again for your help.

I have seen a couple reviews that mention you can have it OC'd at the factory for a price.
Ask when(or before) you buy.

Thanks Namslas90. This doesn't sound too promising, if it has to be done at the factory. The computer is part of a bundle (w/monitor) for sale at Best Buy... normally I wouldn't shop there for a PC, but when I saw it had the E2160 I thought it might be worth the $$$ if I could easily OC it.

Thanks again.

Whats the price?...you might be able to put your own together for less or build a beter rig.

Here at TPU we help lots of people with first time builds.

Thanks for the offer!

For $770 at Best Buy, it has the E2160 Dual-Core 1.8GHz, 3GB DDR2 RAM, 400 GB hard drive, dual layer DVD/CD writer, 19" widescreen monitor, and Vista Home Premium (which I loathe... I much prefer XP SP2 or SP3).

For the $770, if I could OC teh E2160 to 3.0GHz I'd be happy (plus getting a 19" monitor). Can I do better doing it myself?

I've thought about building my own PC (I've upgraded every single PC component over the years... all the cards/drives/PSU... everything except changing motherboards). Is there a sticky thread on this topic?

Thanks!!

Mike
