Router Firewall?

I currently access the internet using the WiFi thats integrated into my P5K-E mobo from a Linksys WRT54GS router. I have comodo firewall installed and running on my pc but I guess when im behind a router I dont need it as the router has its own firewall. How do I know the router has a firewall? Do I need to set it up or is it just automatic?

go to control panel in teh router and security

the firewall on your router isnt as advanced and as smart as the one on your pc, it only blocks connections that you tell it to block instead of comodo looking for anything suspicious and blocking it.
firewalls are automatically set up, but you need to configure the settings.

every router has them now days, and your WRT54GS definitely has one

just go into your admin panel

http://192.168.1.1 and i think the default username is admin and password is admin (you should change this if you havnt already)

then look for the firewall page, or look in the manual you got for the router to tell you how to configure it :)

ok, I checked it out and everything looks good. And since you say the router firewalls arent as advanced as the one on my pc, then I guess i'll keep it running.

that is best IMO, router firewalls are used for when you know what to block, pc firewalls are there to block things that you may not know about but will detect and block it, if its behaving strangely.

windows firewall isnt much better, you might try the old free version of kerio personal firewall, alot of ppl love that one, the old version rocks it doesnt use nearly as much resources as most stuff, the one u want is uhh kerio-personalfirewall-2.1.5-en-win.exe might be worth a try

It's already been said but it's a very good idea to use firewall on your computer also as they are more advanced. Thanks

Your router firewall lets you configure basic things like "Attack Protection", "DOS Protection" and service filtering with basic options for disabling HTTP, Telnet, FTP, TFTP, SNMP from external networks where you still get your internet from your ISP's gateway and every other communication from the WAN is blocked. You can also set up a service filter list in many cases. This is nifty. Though protection from the router isn't an alternative for even software firewalls, leave alone hardware ones. You will need a good software firewall such as free Zone Alarm / the firewall that comes with your security suite, if you're paranoid about security, else a properly updated Windows installation with the Windows Firewall is a good thing too.
