Whenever I try to alter the GPU clocks with this card it crashes the system. I had to uninstall and re-install my drivers to fix it at one point; uninstalling ATITool didn't fix the problem. ATITool version is 0.27 Beta 3. Overclocking using ATI Overdrive is successful.

The log is attached, if you want to check the BIOS I submitted it earlier today for the BIOS collection.

Carrying forward from your previous problem, you seem to have a relatively erratic system. Upping the GPU clock usually involves taking the voltage up and your motherboard could be playing foul here. Did you try OC'ing this same card on another machine? If you did and it didn't work, update its BIOS or wait for an update to roll out. Normally you should be able to step-up the core by at least 40 MHz even on the very early HD3850 BIOS which capped it at 735 MHz.

My brother's 512MB Sapphire 3850 has the same problem in my system: whenever I try to overclock it using Atitool, the system locks up, but it's fine after a reset. This is using 0.27b3, I haven't tried b4 yet.

And, it over clocks using the ATI overclocking program, I don't think it is system related. I've been gone for a week, perhaps now that I have more time to play around, I can test it in another system, but I don't expect that to create a solution.

Please don't mistake a crumby freebie ECS board as incompetence. I've been doing this sort of thing for a bit.

i know this kinda changing the topic here but i have had great luck overclocking my 3870 with rivatuner, its simple, very intuative, and very reliable. and its monitors temps

^OC'ing with ATItool is even more "intutive". You just have to click on one button, sit back and wait for something unusual to show up in the spinning furry cube scene, stop at that and set the clock a few MHz below it. Simple as that.

yah it really does work nicely, but i had lots of issues with atitool when i had my 1950pro(not compatible with any version of atitool) and when i made the change to rivatuner, it has stuck. I like the temp monitors and the GPU usage monitors. Its nice to know how hard to GPU is working under certain loads, ect. Either will work, Atitool is simple, Riva had a few more options, and you can control fan speed!

I seem to be having a similar problem, although much more severe. My OcUK Radeon 3850 pro 512MB causes ATI Tool to crash my pc after a couple of minutes. It displays
Core: -1.#J MHz and Mem: -1.#J MHz, if you hover the mouse over the menu tray icon, and then after a few minutes the monitor crashes and turns off.

This happens with the 'stable' version 0.26. Apart from that the card seems fine, I'm using the latest catalyst drivers.

ATI tool doesn't even give me the chance to overclock or check temps. It is completely unresponsive from the minute I load it up, and gives bogus info.

edit: cool ok cheers man I'll check out the beta

Show me where the FUN control is!!! I wanna turn mine all the way up!!!!

*And I vote Wizzard just renames .027 beta 3, as .027 and post it on the main page.:)

Same here using beta 4 on my Sapphire HD3850 512Mb with ATi 7.12CP. As soon as I apply any (even default) overclock setting the screen turns white and I have to reboot.

so have you tried rivatuner?

Riva works best if you need more room or don't want to run CCC.

Then you can get your fan speed set too :)

Ati-Tool wont clock my card either...

I have a couple of HD3850: 1 Connect3D and 1 PowerColor. Both do the same as described in the previous posts.
Just press apply button at any moment, and you'll have a nice black screen wich require a reboot (tryied with both beta3 and beta4).

I use RT206 but I'm not happy with it: No O/C profiles depending on 2D/3D detection and not user friendly.

Meantime it work wonderfull with the XT1950Pro

I hope Wizzard1 to work on that issue.

thats odd, and I can relate though. I had to use CCC to overclock my video card when i was in XP, I couldnt get Riva to work no matter what I tried. The first time I did a minor OC(much less than I had in CCC) the computer would black screen and require a restart. After that restart I could not even get to the tuning page anymore! I was upset about that because I think I could have hit 14,000 on my 3870. Ahh well, I switched back to Vista for now, and Ill stay there until I get my new mobo. And Ill start over with benchies then! What fun!

In support of RivatUner I must say RT works just fine, except that it has no auto 2D/3D switch capability like ATT has. So you have to define profiles.

when i got back into Vista it worked great, and I still use, I love Riva

:toast: Finaly I got ATT 0.27b4 to work with my HD3850-512.:toast:

Here is the trick: In the system services management console, you'll find "ATI Hotkey Poller" service.

If you want to use ATT for OC your HD38xx, disable this service since that one is used by the driver to detect the 2D/3D changes and conflict with ATT 0.27b4. After you disabled this service, reboot your PC. Now, your HD38xx should use only the max default clocks depending on your card model and manufacturer (no more powerplay).
From now ATT 0.27b4 can be launched but, first of all, you have to configure it. Go settings, open the "HD2000 Overclocking" and uncheck the "If the card has 2D/3D clocks, switch to 3D clocks when starting ATITool". You're set.

Now you can change the GPU/MEM clocks as you wish and even try to find the max clocks.
