My best friend bought me for Christmas Counter Strike: Source. Well, i've downloaded all the games that came with it, Half-Life2 LC and Deathmatch, and Day of Defeat:Source.
Well my problem is that whenever I try and load any of the games that require internet connection I get "HL2.exe stopped working".
I've went through their support, download all the "hotfixes" that they say I need, and still no luck. I don't have any firewalls on also.

the only thing I can think of is maybe you have a program on like peer gaurdian, or maybe your on a proxy, its probably a network related issue

try reinstalling steam?

ive had the same problems a few times all i did to fix it was to reinstall all the games it sucks but atm thats the best i got ill see if i can find another solution for ya that doesnt require you to reinstall

that is what I was thinking. I've e-mailed steam about it and awaiting their answer.

Ive had a couple of friends have these random things, and they were under a proxy, reinstalling allways solves if you have your internet settings good!

I guess in this case it is reinstalling

Hey man, do you have aim installed, if you do that can fuck things up and well if you don't I still have something for you to try.

I have had the same issue as you many times, it happend to me twice cause I had aim installed and there is a quick and simple way to fix the issue.

Just do this. Hope it works for ya:)

Go to the command prompt and type this in:

net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service

Then reboot your computer.

After you run that command you can verify its success by typing in:

net Localgroup Administrators

It should spit out something to this effect:

Administrator
LOCAL
NT AUTHORITY\SERVICE
<Insert your user name here>
The Command Completed Successfully

This also fixed my internet icon in vista, it would never show the globe thingy NOW IT DOES

MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE SPACES AS WELL, there is no mistake in the typeing above do exactly as it is above.

Here's what you do.

1. Borrow the CD/DVD of whatever games you have (granted by your Steam a/c) from absolutely anyone, just keep it aside.


2. Delete Local content of all your existing games by going into their properties in the Steam Games list. Do not uninstall the games

3. Make sure all your games feature in the "Not Installed" list in your Games tab of Steam

4. Install the games from the CD/DVD

5. Restart Steam.

6. Voila! all your games appear in the "Installed" list of the games tab.

7. Re-apply/ re-download all your patches:)

8. Join me in the Indian Gamers League server and let me "educate" you :laugh:

Reason: The installation resources that you downloaded were corrupt.

I did download Aim last night.. I'm uninstalling it right now because of the fact that I really don't need it. and I've uninstalled steam and right now downloading the patches again.. Thanks everyone who's given me the advice.

Ok, that didn't work... but right now I went though, tab by tab and I saw that the "servers" weren't Installed. So I'm doing that now...

There was a bad patch somewhere along the line with steam update, and i remember my friend telling me I had to drop a file inside the steam folder. However the name of this i cannot find. Did you try the forums on Steam? That is where someone posted what to do to fix it. :/ Ill try to get back with the name of the file. It posted similar errors

maybe you need to run hl2.exe as an administrator?

Got it. and just added it. I'll try and stay up as long as I can playing. I have to wake up extra early and be santa clause and cook for the hospital.. lol
