try an old set, just randomly. it may be that Nv dropped the ball at one point.
Also try disabling sound for a minute, just in case its sound drivers.

This is a thread based on GF8xxx series cards having issues in NWN from very lagged responses, black screens, low fps and the sorts. I knew I had read something about it. I will keep digging because I thought I had another good source. But check that out and see if you have any luck.
Hope that helps! :toast:
Edit: Also what Mussels suggested, disable the sound, or certain sound features to see if that helps.
8 series claims another victim...
I can't play red faction :(

hmmm i was actually at that site right after i posted .......i tried turning off threaded optimization in the nvidia control panel....nooo go....still wont work..and yes i made surte it was nwn.exe spacific...i hear the old 94.xx drivers work with over 100+FPS only problem is i play alot of newer games so i like the optimizations the new drivers bring its usually key to me actually making the new games playable. ill try the sound now.

Bummer dude...I'm sure there's gotta be a way aside from older drivers...but hard saying. I miss NWN, I gave it to my buddy over a year ago...(he moved away since then). I hope you can get going w/o too much hassle. In the end it depends on how badly you want the game to play nice on your rig in comparison to newer games. Hopefully that happy medium can be found where it's all good though.

Well i remember and old ati driver bug it happened when you enabled shiny water.....so i disabled that switched the sound to eax instead of eax3 no diff put it on miles fast 2d......no improvement.....shut off the sound....nothing ........threaded optimization is off the sound was off i disabled vsync and turned off shiny water.....still 15fps.....then i pu all of those settings back on vsync...shiny water....eax3......you want to know what....still 15fps.................sigh.

Best of luck to ya!
Does NWN2 not interest ya? I have heard that it's a lot better now with patching than it was after release, and that the expansion is pretty good. I have yet to play it myself, but have been considering it.
Can't blame ya for wanting to play the original though, it's still an excellent game.

well i own nwn2....and your right the patching is much better....but as you say i love the original nothing like the sound of the docks and tomi undergallows saying some catchy line that and i dont even have all the expansions just the first 2 shadows of undrentide and hordes of the underdark...i want diamond it came out right after i bought the platinum edition ...and im not finished hordes yet...and dont own kingmaker etc...that and after hordes i downloaded this amazing set of mods called the dreamcatcher series...i have yet to play that story line i played nwn2 a little bit..didnt get far at all though im still just horribly inlove with the original...and now paying more attention to it still because its playing slower than it would on my laptop specs below...:(

Well then transfer it to your lappy and play it on that! :D
I know that may sound lame, but if it plays better, no sense in beating yourself up, just transfer your profile junk over and be done with it. At least until a fix is accomplished by someone that will actually work for the masses, that may be your best option. And granted I know that lappy isn't really a gaming lappy, but if it can let you enjoy the game better, I see no point in fighting to get your gaming system to work with NWN right now. That way you can work on getting it to work right when you feel the need for a challenge...or someone happens upon a good fix for this issue.
I did some more searching, but they all come up with the same things to try, nothing really solid for a fix. Best of luck to ya!

True...this is one of those things that is causing a plague for NV8xxx users whom still enjoy this game. There will be someone that finds a way to enjoy modern games, yet be able to play this game with ease. It's gotta happen, and that'd be sweet if you're that guy!
If all else fails, if you have USB2.0 you could just deal with crap load times and load the game on an external hdd...lol. That'd be one rough way to go, but it would still play better than 1fps. Let's just hope it doesn't come down to that!

It may be a long shot, but have you installed the AMD dual core optimizer?

1 more idea ,probably a slim chance but nm..
do u have dual monitors setup in ur gfx card properties? even if u only use 1 make sure its set to only 1 and not 2.
Supreme Commander had a similar prob ,when dual monitors were activated the game ould crawl along at under 10fps ,turning off the extra screen whether real screen of just another 1 set up in options made the fps shoot up again.
dual can simply mean u have your TV-Out enabled.
mebbe no help but is worth a shot.

Well I'll be honest here, as a player of NWN and NWN2, I can tell you right now that game is programmed like dog **** for graphics.
Try to turn down settings, if that doesn't work, it may just simply not like your video card. Great games but boy do they slack off in parts....
I can barely run maxed in NWN2 on my machine, I get drops to around 10-15fps which is HORRIBLE and totally uncalled for, its not that intense.
