The HD is a Western Digital Caviar WD400 (40gb).
Now what happens is the pc boots up but it takes quite awhile and then when the desktop appears it goes into a loop and reboots. I need to get the address book and some documents from it.Is there anything that can be done? I would really appreciate any suggestions.:respect:

If you have another HDD hook that up and boot from there and try to get the folders and stuff from that one.

I don't think they mean connecting another PC TO the one you want to back up(if thats what you mean).
They mean setting up another internal HD and booting on to it and then browse your other one to back it up.

replace the non working hdd with a working hdd and the plug in your non working hdd as the slave and it should work good enough for you to access all your files.
otherwise look around and you can find some freeware to use as a hdd disk recovery tool

make the Hdd that you have in the computer you are using now the Master HDD, then make the HDD that is faulty as the slave... your computer will boot up with the master and your os will see the bad driver as a new one...

alright, i found where they keep your contacts, emails, and all that great stuff.
1.
Install Thunderbird on the new drive
2.
make sure your hidden files and folders are viewable.
(Control Panel>Folder Options>ViewTab than go and select view hidden files and folders.)
3.
after that is done go to this location.
OLD DRIVE>Documents And Setting>**your username**>Application Data>ThunderBird
and copy & paste the "Profiles" folder to the same location on the new drive.
4.
then go to
OLD DRIVE>Documents And Setting>**your username**>Local Data>Application Data>Thunderbird
and copy & paste the "Profiles" folder to the same location on the new drive.
when you open up the program everything should be back to the way it was. if you have any problems post them.

wait I found the folder and swapped it out but now thunderbird wont open. message says that there is already a thunderbird application running and that I either must stop it or restart my system which I tried.
I'm gonna swap it back and see what happens.>......... OK it works fine when I swap it back.
