View Full Version : Small(big) problem with Cpu

Well i was dusting my computer(canned air) and i went to take my heatsink to the cpu because for somereason there was dust under it and i couldnt get to it. Any way i went to take it off the the CPu came with it:eek:, what happened?? nothing seems to be broke but the cpu seems glued to it. Also any way to fix it(dont really care i would like an upgrade but would be good to use as spare cpu)


ALso forgot to put in that it came right off, didnt force or feel resistance at all

How do the pins look? It's not glued.... If things look ok, just put the thing back in, clean off the old paste with some alcohol and reapply new paste and heatsink

Pins look fine nothing seems out of line

That happened to me with my Opteron, the socket still had the latch pulled down and everything. If you didn't use anything like liquid metal on an aluminum heatsink or thermal epoxy then this is how I removed mine. I pushed on the edge of the PCB making sure not to bend any pins and sort of scooted the processor to the edge of the heatsink and removed it that way. I also tried using a twisting motion to break the adhesive bond between the CPU and heatsink but I didn't really want to put much pressure while trying to pry it off at the same time. The only trouble with the way I removed it is you may leave scratch marks on the IHS or heatsink. I didn't mind with mine because I lap my heatsinks everytime I take them off and I was removing the CPU to cut off the IHS anyway.

Yep.

I had this happen to me once. It's as Sneeky said, you just have to try twisting it off.

In the future, if you guys get a really stuck one, use a few drops of charcoal lighter fluid and allow it to soak in. It'll disolve thermal compound quite nicely and doesn't evaporate very quickly giving you time to work. ;) Also good for clean-up.
