Well so far the only overclock i have done is my cpu @3.6ghz everything else stock and im getting close to 19k your system matches mine more or less so its gonna be a tough one especially on air cooling and i have the 965 chipset.
1.67V on air is insane.

1.67V on air is insane.
Agreed... Don't even try, or you'll have to buy a new CPU sooner or later :( For a short test it's OK if you have somethhing like an Ultra120Extreme sitting on it... But it won't be stable, nor will it survive a long testing period...
I'm on water and I get core temps close to 80C
I'm waiting for my prototype #2 to replace my first block which isn't quite as efficient as I'd like it to be, and the block for the card is on its way too, so we can have a match :)
CF against x2 if I'm correct :D
Edit: Sorry, i've just had a look: you have an x2 as well so the only main difference is 965 vs. x38 :) everything else is pretty much the same

Actually it is a modded 3870, that uses DDR3 But gigabyte sells it as 3870, my driver recognizes it at 3800 series not 3850... so Model, and power spec comes from 3870.. shouldn't stay in 3850 section.
By the way, memory is clocked 1075Mhz (2150Mhz) not 1245...

How cheesy, you edited your own words so they wouldnt be used against your score....Bah who cares really, I dont care as I am not leading on anything.
It WAS your words that made me point it out...so dont ACTUALLY anyone here as it was your mistake!!!!!!
BTW if you are running a HD3850 BIOS how is it a 3870???...you by your own doing and admision made it a HD3850 either way!

I already did that m8 i even set 3dmark to highest priority its a shame xp wont use all 4 gig of ram or 24k would have been mine. Im not going to push my luck again though my temps got too high i was really lucky i didnt have a dead cpu/mobo or somthing.
Ill wait now till i get another x2 and one of the new quads maybe better cooling im happy with what i got for now.
I was thinking about the dry ice thing and it seems a good idea providing i could make a moulded pipe coming off the heatsink to run any condensation out and away from my mobo.
But there are other factors too like what sort of heat would my caps be under and can they handle it?

Dude ofcourse look at your processor, for 3dmark06 it is really out dated. If you are smart like me:laugh: you r going to take a step to AMD Spider black platform. AMD is really getting back at the moment especially with the AMD 3870X2 combined with Crossfire X. But wait with a very expencieve processor of AMD the Overclocking capabilities are not optimal at the moment many people donīt even get 10 MHZ with stock cooling without blowing up your Mobo!
read the review here about the MSI mobo that has been tested lately:

u do the the work freak.. its ultimately up to u.. but it does show the same 2000 points or so difference in crossfire as it does with just one card.. its just the cpu score.. the quad gets double what the dual gets..
i think the seperate x2 section isnt really needed that could get shown with the card description.. it is just crossfire on one card.. the quad camp and the dual camp sit apart thow.. he he
i find it a good reference thread.. the first page is perfect for showing at a glance what does what.. if the details are missing it isnt so clear.. quad or dual is a big detail and not everyone knows the names of each cpu..
the other thing that might come up in the future is crossfireX three or four cards.. trifire and quadfire.. he he he
u could end up with about ten different categories.. u need some help perhaps..
best of luck dude..:)

First of all sorry for posting so much i just finished a Crossfire X Ati HD 3870X2 benchmark in 3DMark06. The score was a bit disapointing because we didnīt have access to a 2 times 16 lane PCI E mobo :(. The other problem was a Intel E6600 Gonrou at 3600 MHZ also a little bottleneck but still i experienced a higher performace of about 1200 marks higher that shows even with the first Crossfire X driver (8.3) a higher performance. The score was 16912 against my single slot HD 3870X2 of 15817 the E6600 speed here was 3780MHZ so do the math over 17000 with a bottlenecked system little performance increase but still pleased.:toast:

3DMark06 tests all the cores, a Quadcore Q6600 is a double E6600 and you see a mayor difference in CPU testing so there realy is a difference in Benchmarking Dualcore and Quadcore systems.

the game tests are actually single threaded not even dual.. he he
but.. 2006 with more than one 3870 card is one hundred percent cpu limited..
with two cards in crossfire its all down to how fast the cpu cores run and in the cpu test how many of them u have..
quad core will score nearly twice the cpu score a dual will and a dual will score twice what a single does.. the cpu test has nothing to do with the grafix card/cards
with two cards the game tests are now entirely cpu speed limited as well.. the faster the cpu the higher the score.. the card clocks dont matter much with two cards only the cpu speed and the number of cpu cores..
3dmark 2006 is now an utterly useless grafix card benchmark.. with crossfire its now a cpu benchmark..
sad but true.. a pair of 3870 cards are too much more it..

I thought as much, Thanks for confirming it :). Since I can get 19k with my X2 at stock speeds (CPU at 3.9Ghz), That's why I'm not getting much of an improvement from overclocking the X2. Never knew it was only single threaded. So it seems the trick to getting over 20k is to have a CPU over 4Ghz. How some 2 3870s are CPU limited, but say an 8800 Ultra doesn't bottle neck so much in comparison? Do 3800s have "more raw power" all together? I know an ultra isn't faster than 2 3870s though, I was just wondering if CPU limitation is more susceptible to a multi GPU setup.

Looks like i have nothing to explain now
Anything above 4ghz, the SM scores seem to top out (unless i overclock the gpu's come more). Anything more, im just adding to the CPU score.
But overclocking the cards and CPU helped bump my score from 18.2k to 19k..
I'll get myself confused thinking about it :p
Btw, i do know my CPU stresses alot more in games with crossfire than it did with a single card.

I need to flash my sapphire card, its still using the locked bios. (I just need to get up the nerve to do it )

Updated, my 3DM06 is up to 19507 (http://service.futuremark.com/results/showSingleResult.action?resultId=5622993&resultType=14) now, I'm really surprised that I've been able to get my 3870X2 to 918 on both cores, for some reason I have to set it to 930 for it to register as 918. I'm gonna be going water cooling soon so I'll hopefully be able to crank it up more :D

are you doing any mods on the card?? 918 is really sweet!!
That 918/930 thing, I had the same problem with mine! It has to get up to the next strap level. Or whatever the equivalent is for GPUs. I bet if you went to 934(or somewhere near) you would get to a higher clock.
Let me know if those can go even higher, ohh and for water, I recommend EK water blocks. I got a full cover for my 3870 and I LOVE it. It keeps the core at 35 C running 100% at 904mhz

very very impressive mod, i would like to do that to my 3870 but im gonna wait until it becomes alittle old, just incase i destroy it I dont want to feel like i wasted 250 bucks!
I just thought I would share this again, I posted this on Jan. 14, then I tried modding my card on the 17th. On the 18th it died :(. I have not had a card since(besides a crappy 1650pro I had lyin around) Lately I have been really going crazy and decided that its time to get back into the game.
Im hoping I can round up all my parts this week or early next week. Im getting a new video card, a mobo and a new case!!! yeah for me!!!

No mods :D all stock ;), I'll clock my CPU back up now and do a re-run and post some screenies. I downclocked my CPU to keep things nice and cool. Is there any way of upping the volts of a 3870X2 through software yet? (bar flashing the bios)

the later bios moves in 13 mhz jumps.. the next one after 918 is 931.. there is nothing in between..
if the CCC says anything between these 13mhz jumps the card is clocked at the lower figure.. for example 930 would still be 918..
its also been said this is the difference between the two bios.. the early one moved in 7mhz jumps.. at 864 it f-cked up.. at 872 it passes the f-ck up and works okay..
the later bios cos it jumps in twice as big a jumps never hits the f-ck up point..
so if u go straiight from 862 to 874 the early bios works.. u miss the error point.. assuming your card will run this fast many wont..
its also very clear later chips are better than the early ones.. later chips seem to be going places the early ones needed a volt mod to go..

thats the numbers I was looking for, thanks trog.
And I was really impressed with my GeCube when it was running, I was at 891 all day, I could bench at 904, and alot of others needed a volt mod to hit that. Back then i was doing good, but now there is many people that have hit the 1000!

the other thing i need to point out.. the ati reference cooler is a very good cooler all it needs is the fanfix bios.. ati chose to run the fan at around 30% and target 90 C as the cards operating temps..
check this thread to see how the reference cooler with fanfix bios and the zalman cooler compare..

hey trog, do you think your crossfire would run any faster if you were on a true dual 16x board??
yes... more so at low resolution 3dmarks than in higher resolution games..
the 17k would be nearer 19k in 2006 and the 55k would be nearer 70k in 2003..
basically the more the card is loaded with a higher resolution and AA.. the less the difference is.. the fast cpu and low resolution 3dmarks exaggerate the real differences..
it kinda works i the same way a slower cpu would.. high resolution low frame rates no difference.. low resolutions high frame rates big difference..
trog
ps.. my amd 6000+ at 3.35 gig with a true 16 x 16 pci-e 2 board only made 13000 in 2006.. so it aint quite as clear as it seems..

yah, I see what you mean. And that makes sense.
So you plan on switchin to a x38/48 board??
correct me if i am wrong, I thought only the 790 boards from amd are a true multi 16x. Or if I am wrong, what otehr platforms can handle it??
trog100
03-10-2008, 09:08 PM
my amd example was a 790x mfi board.. sadly it didnt do much in 2006 without the overclocked intel chip to drive it..
but no i aint planning to go P38/48 any time soon.. i went anti-cross fire after the first try which was why i bought the p35 board.. i did toy with the idea of one x 2 3870 but settled for another cheapo 3870.. i still dont think crossfire is worth having.. but still have it.. he he he
the extra card didnt cost that much.. and crossfires default setting is OFF

i dont want to piss on anybodies parade but something is way wrong here..
your last score in 2006 at default settings should be way higher.. something is killing these score.. i suspect the 8.3 cats..
i can run my system at 3.6 and similar card settings to prove something is wrong if wanted.. i recon 15 or 16k is nearer what your system should score.. at the cpu and card speeds u are running at..
something is wrong.. not just with your new scores either..

I didn't want to overvolt it to 4+ Gghz just yet, honestly even stock at 3.0Ghz its super fast, at 3.6 i dont even notice a difference, maybe just super Pi, and 3dmark of course :)
I figure I'd let a bunch of others test the limits of the E8400 for now.
Trogg, I am running just a single 3870 sorry to confuse with the crossfire comment, as the above poster said it was just for futureproofing.
My main goal with this system was a very stable machine with good performance and good upgradability.. Nice that there are these options nowadays, just it is important to research each components since there are so many nowadays.

Now Mussels can stop bitchin'!!
Cat 8.3 have appalling performance on XP and so I'm not using them, still on 8.2. Once the fix is out for 8.3 I'll give it a shot? I didn't actually release they had such a feature, do you have a link to any info on it?

Well reading the forums and the comments that have been made I think Im going to go back to an ati card Ive got an 8800gts 320 card right now the first nvidia card Ive ever owned. I had and x1950pro the 8800 is faster but Ive noticed that the colors look better with and ati vid card for one thing. I think the 3870 with 512 ram should be a little faster and the price is right. So you guys think the 8.2 drivers are the best at the moment.

EDIT: My bad, didn't see the link...
How did you manage such a score increase with lesser GPU clocks and only a Dual Core?

Ahhhh! I didn't see that, I swear the ORB needs that flag at the top instead of halfway down the listing... :slap:
My bad! Nice score!

Heck, generally you can determine that from score alone. Having the cards clocks available would be even more helpful.
sorry to be a smartass...

Yes, 8.2. Glad someone has the honesty to admit that the image quality of ATi is reason enough to warrant a change! Good on ya, mate!:toast:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ever since I dumped my SLI 7800gtx system and went to 1950pro's I have been saying the same thing! I took a small hit in performance but the image quality was gold! Everytime I says that someone always has to piss in my cheerios

i can get you up! I need a CPUz and a GPUz screenie to get it on though. And if you can, please try to run 12 x 10, I think we will get some negative feedback from others for changing. I understand its almost identical but it wont stop people from not liking it!

that shouldnt effect core abilities though, when i first got my card, I ran a swiftech mcw60 with the stock ram heat spreader, I only ran it for a day, but it worked fine.

not that I doubt your score - but something doesnt seem right - if you look at other computers, that clearly are higher than yours (CORE, CPU CORE, MEM even) your 1000 points higher and almost 100 less on the GPU core. I have to say, something sounds fishy
and 9 x 463 is 4.16Ghz

first question - I think the post - process needs to be disabled if your getting a freeze at startup, but will that improve numbers?
Does anyone here have a problem with me posting this score?? I would really like to see Kup run 12x10. Just for the sake of competition here.

I won't be able to get the same score with a pic like that and without completely changing monitors I can't get 12x10 either... :(
I can just prove I can run those clocks and that'll suffice until my next entry?

the 9x463 was my bad, it should be 8x463 for 3.7GHz. How do the clocks look fishy? Read the description for the clocks used, 2K6 is notorious for misreading clocks...hence my Quad coming up as 4.16GHz in 2K6 when it's only 3.7GHz...
You'll only need to take a look @ Futuremark to see my rep' there... :D

I'll see what I can do tomorrow with sourcing a 12x10 monitor, I'm sure there is an old CRT around here that'll do it! :D

I dont know, your score is awesome! I am just confused at how high it is in comparison to other systems here. You can go down the list and compare results to the systems that produced them, but yours definitly does not fit the norm.
Ill talk it over with the OP and see what we think, but honestly, you get a old CRT, and run 12x10, then it cant be argued! Id love to see that, but taking over 1rst with these circumstances is tough to swallow, i really think we will get alot of guff for that.

oh ok, I here yah! and I am aware of 3dmark always multiplying by the stock multi.
compare your results to The Haunted - he has a higher CPU clock, higher GPU core, and similar memory, and your beating him by 1000??? that doesnt add up

Not a problem at all. I'd be wary of a new member coming in and posting the top scores too. It's the same on my forums (link in sig, take a look some time) with new people, even though we're only still small there is always that air of suspicion with a new poster... :wtf: :D
The thing with 3DMark and multipliers is that it reads the hard coded multi, not the actual set one, same thing with CoreTemp too up until v0.97.

thanks man, I appreciate it, you know, with a screenie of CPUz and GPUz and the score at 12x10, there would be no arguement at all, it just all happens to be horrible circumstances that really suck for both of us
