View Full Version : ipod or zune
I have a Christmas gift card to use and I am looking at a 8mb Zune2 and the ipod nano. I have never even owned a media player and wanted some input from you guys before I use my gift card.
Thanks in advance.

go for the ipod just because the zune is still kinda new to the market and microsoft doesnt get things right the first time around and the ipod is the most mature of the two and would be the better choice although the ipod does scratch easily but a case would fix that up

I love my Zune but I wish it had more than 30gb
If they made a 160GB Zune I'd love it forever.

lol. What the hell are you putting on it?
I got 10 gigs of music on my Zune and find it hard to listen to it all.
I prefer Zune over the ipod. :)

But my movies wouldn't fit.

I paid for every single song, hahahaha.
I got my Zune off of a website for $80, but they sent me a used instead of as advertised new one, so I got my money back.
Free Zune!
Or else I'd have the 160gb Ipod Classic

Neither, I'd say Creative Zen Vision M 60 GB :p

It's the most durable player I've used, survived many falls without any errors, has seemless firmware upgrade to the X-Fi processing as promised by Creative. It uses a tiny perpendicular drive by Toshiba, it's software is intutive and so is the input.

I've dropped my Zune 4 or 5 times on the factory where I work's hard concrete floor.
I feel my Zune has the following advantages over the Ipod:
Easy to use interface
Quick charging
Durable
Great customer support
Much easier to use software
Much more attractive
Beautiful full color screen, bright, high resolution
Zune Social Features (4 or 5 other people at my work have Zunes, we trade off songs all the time from across the building)
Really nice framerates on video, no lag
Longer battery life
Badass magnetic stock earbuds that pump out highly balanced sound other than the annoying tinny-sounding Apple ones
Made by Microsoft
Not an Apple product
Much easier navigation, even on Zune 1s.
Recessed controls so you don't have to put it on hold every time you stick it in your pocket.

The ZUNE kicks @$$ it is beast!!!!!!!!! the itunes software is too bland and is way out of zune's league...the 2nd generation zunes are also as slim if not slimer than the ipod nanos not mention a larger screen but with still less total surface area....so all and all the zune is the ultimate mp4 player and when microsoft comes out with the zune 3rd gen or zune phone all hell will break loose...microsoft will then rule the world

Despite all that, the iPod is still the most popular mp3/mp4 player on the planet. I don't think MS will be ruling the mp3/4 player market any time soon.
The iPod has a way larger aftermarket available to it, that's the reason I stick with it. Hell, my Pioneer head unit in my car, and my next home surround reciever both have built in iPod control. When is the last time you saw a head unit or receiver with Zune control built in?

ipod for one reason: rockbox
check out http://www.rockbox.org and don't ask me questions about it lol since they're easily answered by looking around on the site
although, I'm not sure the latest nanos are supported . . . but whatever, I say get a 160gb ipod 5.5gen :)
edit: or buy my fuxx0r3d cowon iaudio x5 60gb . . . It just needs the battery soldered back on, and some buttons soldered (or you can be like me and control it by pressing a wire to the right joints ) Oh, and the hdd always ends up with at least one corrupted file that can't be copied from it, and the problem persists even after formatting. the line in/out doesn't work either, and neither does the remote port I think (don't have a remote to test with, but there's a wire that needs soldered back on to the pcb that I haven't figured out what it affected yet, but I think it has something to do with that) . . . I'll probably end up just hooking the battery back up and using it as an external drive for unimportant shit (mostly what i used it for in the first place) . . . maybe I'll get a new tip for my soldering iron and solder some buttons with extensions and enclose them in some plastic or some shit and make my own remote lol

At the sizes you are talking about (I'm assuming you mean 8gb) a creative zen or sandisc or something would be a better choice, both the zune and ipod are overpriced in this section, and there's no reason to deal w/ their drm stuff w/ that little music. If you want to go higher, I prefer the ipod for a number of reasons, but I'm talking $250 for the 80gb. Anything under that, don't get either, go w/ something else.

Actually, I agree with farlex85. If you want ~8gb, buy a Sansa e280 v1 on ebay and put rockbox on it :) Buying a brand new one will get you the v2 which isn't supported by rockbox, and probably won't be for a while, if at all. The only difference between the two is some internal hardware, which is why rockbox won't run on v2, but other than that they're exactly the same. I bought my gf a v1 e280 to put rockbox on and it's absolutely awesome. Very small and sleek and sexy looking ;)
