I would like to thank A-DATA (http://www.adata.com) for supplying the review sample. The company produces some very unique and useful memory products, ranging from a complete offering of notebook and desktop memory over memory cards in various shapes, sizes and speeds to USB storage in many flavors. A-DATA also has licenses to produce such memory devices with themes of Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney.

We have the pleasure to review the Sport S702 today. It is available in three different colors:

A-Data ships the Sporty Series S701 in a round plastic package. It is completely transparent. The S701 can clearly be viewed in the front, and the small strap is stored in the back of the package. A-Data has not welded it shut on the edges, which makes it very easy to open. Simply cut the pieces of tape, holding the two halves together.

The strap can easily be attached to the S701 and features a metal clamp to keep the strap together. This gives the piece a very high quality feel, which goes great with the metal casing of the S701.

A Closer Look

Taking a closer look at the flash device, the first attribute you will notice is the build quality. The metal alloy casing and rubberized surface give it a very rugged feel. This is the type of flash device which goes perfect on your key chain. Nonetheless, you should not drive over the stick with your car or drop it into any liquid. One side holds the black slider, with which you can extend the USB connector out of the casing. It is very similar to the system used on the A-Data PD17, which we reviewed in the past.

A-Data has placed the company logo and series name on the side of the metal frame. You will not find any text on the outside of the S701 which tells you its capacity.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/stickopen_small.jpg (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/stickopen.jpg) http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/stickserial_small.jpg (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/stickserial.jpg)
Sliding the USB connector out of the case, it becomes apparent, that it is a normal USB connector, but without the metal frame around it. This means that you can connect the S701 upside down into the USB plug. Doing so will not harm your system or the flash device whatsoever. The serial number and the actual capacity is etched into the black USB plug itself.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/graph1.gif
The A-DATA Sport S701 manages a very respectable 23.9 MB/s of raw read performance. This places the drive right in the upper bulk of our chart. This is not a disappointment, as the drive is not intended to be blazing fast, but to look good on your key chain.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AData/Sport_Series_S701_2GB/images/graph2.gif
The S701 shines when it comes to access times. The drive manages 0.6 ms, which is well below the 1.0 ms required for Windows Vista ReadyBoost Certification.

ATTO confirms the read speeds we obtained with HD Tach. The write speed of just above 6 MB/s is nothing out of the ordinary as well. This speed was obtained on a nForce 680i board.

The A-DATA Sport Series S701 continues the companies commitment to offer out of the ordinary designs for specific uses. The S701 may not be water proof, but should be right at home on your key chain. The metal frame and rubberized surface should keep the inner parts safe from bumps, drops and sharp objects.
The flash drive is also available in three colors, so girls can go for red - if they like - or choose black or blue instead. Even though the S701 is very compact, it is not the smallest USB flash device on the market but offers up to 8 GB capacity. Once again, the S701 is a very specialized flash drive, for a very specific purpose and offers everything you would expect from a device intended to be carried in your pocket along with your keys.
