View Full Version : Molex Connectors hate humans?

Is it just me, or do molex connectors refuse to budge from hard drives and disk drives just to spite me?

Bastards.

They hate humans man.

Even the 3.5'' floppy connector that my friend had hooked up to his X-Fi card wouldnt come off--I guess it had a little hook thingy on the bottom of it in a place that has no business being pried on.

Everything should have sata power in the future.

It always ends up jerking off and my hand flys out into the case, usually getting a deep cut on the sharp edge of a component or the case.

I once stuck my finger through a ~1/4" pin, hurt like a SOB.

I dont get it though, why the hell are they so damn tight.
There has to be a better way they could have done it.

Sata connectors are a godsend.

Yeah thats what I just did :p

I totally agree.

Apart from the molexes (sp?) I find it so awfully hard to insert cards. When I replaced my 8600GTS with the 8800GT the latter simply wouldn't go in properly. Now I'm a girl obviously lacking man muscles but should man muscles be needed just to insert a graphics card?!? In the process I saw my mobo bending slightly and my intestines got knotted... but I got it in and it worked... whew!

I can't imagine why stuff is so tight. Is it planned to withstand an earthquake or a kick dropping the case to the floor?

Ironically, whenever I transport my old P4 I always have to remove and reinsert the RAM sticks. And yeah they're always all so awfully tightly inserted still... so the end doesn't doesn't justify the means at all in that case... :ohwell:

I don't ever really have a problem removing them . . .

but, installing is a different story - even on brand new connectors, you always get one or two pins - usually on the far sides of the connector - that are angled in a way such that you can't just plug the male and female connectors together straight . . . you've gotta hold one at an angle, and then kinda rotate it straight, and hope you don't bend another pin - then, should you actually get the balls to try and bend them straight with a small flat blade or otherwise, they go and break - so you've got to remove the pins from the connector, pry the crimps apart on the broke connector, and install a new pin that for some reason isn't the same size as the others, it's usually a little too big around, so when installing the connectors, it wides the female pin, and then no other molex connector fits right on that female connector anymore :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

whoever patented the original molex designs has probably been laughing it up all the way to the bank for years - he can pay someone to install them for him :wtf:

People have brought me systems they replaced the CD drives in and the molex connectors were in upside down, cooking the drive.

:twitch:

what'd they do, take a razor blade and shave the squared edges of the connector to get it to fit?!

Last time I stripped down my pc the molex hooked up to my 120mm exhaust was bloody tight I had too use a hell of a lot of force to unplug it... Plugging them back in is a right pain in the backside too. If I had a dollar for every swear word I have said when building a pc I would be a wealthy man.

I had a bad experience with these too. I was once dissembling my PC, pulling out the Molex connector off a EIDE drive which was in front of a video-card. I was pulling out with all the huff-puff, it got off in a jerk and my fist hit the edge of the video-card with force and gave my fist a horrible cut. What was worse, in this same incident pulling a Molex off the video-card caused something similar to happen and my right hand fist hitting the aluminium drive-cage. No cut here though. But don't worry, Molex is being phased out, with components using it on the decline.

I've hurt myself on molex connectors, but I've never cut myself. There might be some pain, but it usually goes away after 5 minutes or so.

I once had a CPU dropped in from an F-16 fighter jet going full speed. Like a bomb. Amazing accuracy. Had the same done for the heatsink too... amazing contact!

do they install better when the components have broken the sound barrier? more seat pressure or something?

Hulk would probably be the worst system builder ever. Buying a cheap case with sharp edges is not ideal, otherwise he'd go all green, and break everything, and then get even angrier when they won't RMA his stuff.
It's a chain that never stops.

Molex connectors are a royal b1tch. I hate having to change things out. Like HDD's, DVD drives, fans, etc.

It always ends up jerking off and my hand flys out into the case, usually getting a deep cut on the sharp edge of a component or the case.

Happens to me too..

What I do is I grab all the wires coming from the pins of the molex and i pull them in one direction so that the pins move in the other, which doesnt keep them straight but at least keeps them together in a line.

yeah, I've done that sometimes, too.

Best thing to hit the molex scene was the advent of the quick release connectors - it made removing them soooo much easier . . . . but it added to the difficulty of installing them

lol... my PC and the errm... nvm nothing sus, anyway i've never really found any problem with removing molexes. But fdd.... *throws one out the window*. I notice how new sticks of RAM are a pain in the arse to install, with the unburred pcb substrate...

Quick release seemed a good idea, until i got my 9800 pro which had the molex set too far back on the pcb (see pic), and i had to use a nasty3pin-4pin fan connector with a regular molex connector, which looked real crappy

I had an Enermax Liberty 500W before this Seasonic M12 600W that had an awesome "single clipped" quick release molexes. Then came the Seasonic with dual clipped molexes. I soon noticed Seasonic's don't work too well (infact they sucked hard) so I swapped the good, single clipped connectors from the Liberty before selling the Enermax.

Always a pleasure to detach 'n' attach couple dozen connectors with no appropriate molex removal tool...

God I hate molex connectors. I don't know how many times I've cut myself trying to pull them out. One time I actually cut my hand badly on my old 9600 PRO when pulling it out of a hard drive, it might still have some blood on it. I especially hate it when the pin contact is bad and the current actually jumps a bit from the male to female end and melts the plastic around it, welding the 2 connectors together. That takes so much force it's unbelievable.

I hate them as well....I have the hardest time hooking fans up, but the f**king pins in the male part never match the pins in the female end....god i hate them. But those quick release connectors are awesome, i have them on my corsair:)

I work on cars, so it's not that big of a deal, but they are tight as hell, I always bash my hand when unplugging them.

i though i had a good PSU till i aquired my Silverstone, those molex Connectors are so tight that it takes a huge ammount of force to do anything with them. It was alot of fun when i connected and then disconnected a Molex from my MOBO, and hit my gfx card and then sliced my hand across my Zalman's razor sharp HSF blades. Hurt and bleed like a byoch.
