just something random i found out while building a new system with a abit an8 motherboard.
i wanted to make the inside of this case quite smart as it has a pespects side panel so i used ROUND IDE cables as i have in meny other systems, only problem was when it came to install the operating system i had touble with writting to the hard drive. Well after trying loads of diffrent things (other HD's and OS's) i change the IDE cable on the HD to the BLACK RIBON IDE that came with the board and this fixed the problem.
There is nothing in the ABIT manual about this so i hope this will help same someone so time if they the same problem

Odd I switched to round cables on my ABit IS7 and have no issues, now granted I am using a SATA HDD but my DVD and CD-Rom are on a round cable and the DVD runs in UDMA 2 and the CD at Multi word DMA 2.Could just be the cable isnt the right or a bad cable

this should not be happening .. ide is a standard .. maybe your cable is damaged?

My thought exactly,I know the round cable I am using is not the best quality(the rubber covering moves around exposing the braided single wires) so Im sure if 1 of those wires broke it would be toast

he probably was using a 40pin at first. 40->80 is a big difference. :)

what do you mean when you say 40-80? the black abit IDE appers to be exactly the same as a standard 40pin IDE
wonder if they have somehow uprated the speed of it from 133 to 150 so it would mach the SATA's

An 80 pin cable has 40 extra ground cables to keep the signal good enough for higher speeds. 40 pins cables are limited to 33Mb/s. An 80 pins cable connector still has only 40 pins. And the speed isn't updated since theres no reason to try to match SATA, sata is the successor of ATA133.
You usually get 2 IDE cables with a mobo, 1 80 and one 40.

IDE isnt gonna hit 150mb/s.. ever ;) I'm thinkin you just grabbed a wrong cable? a 40pin has caused a ton of problems in the past for me.

i forgot to post iv finally had a reply from abit! about 2 months after i asked them now thats service
its all to do with the speeds that the cable can send information 66/100/133/150 and the quality of the cable much like speaker cable the better the cable (resitance) the better the sound but with the ide's if the "sounds" not good enough then the might not work
hope this helps :)
