I just decided to try overclocking my ati 9600xt (500core/300 mem)(im stuck with that card for now because sony lied about the PSU, but thats another story). Anyways, I'm using ati tool and checked for the max memory speed I could use. When it reached about 333, it started to display artifacts and ati tool started to slow down the mem speed, but it slowed it down to less than 190 and the screen got really messed up. I stoped and had to restart to get a normal screen. Is this normal for ati tool? Whats happening? I was scared to let it continue so i stoped, but now i have no way of finding the max safe speed. Any suggestion/advise?
Thanks.

do it by hand. :)

I just did that and found I can get about a 10% increase in mem speed without artifacts. I have not tryed the core yet.
Im going to test the core and ram independently to see what i can get. For example if I find I can get a 10% increase on both independently, is it ok to OC them both at the same time or will that generate too much heat ect?
thanks again

Generally if you can do a 10% on core and 10% on memory, if you want to do both at the same time it won't be able to do 10% on each at the same time. I'm not sure if it is heat or lack of power but generally it can't do it. One thing to keep in mind is that increasing the core speed will affect performance much more than increasing the memory speed.

I've never seen that problem actuaklly, on a video.... even a no power connector GPU like an x700... :)

does'nt the x700 agp require a connection to a power supply?

I dont think any x700's do.

Hmmmmm...I really wanted a x700 agp too, but im stuck with a 270 watt PSU. At bestbuys web site it is stated that the x700apg does require a 300 watt PSU, but compusas website says it does not. However, I wanted to know for sure so I checked out ati's webpage and they say:
PCI Express® Model Requirements
PCIe based PC with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
An additional connection to the system's power supply is not required
AGP Model Requirements
AGP 8x or 4x graphics slot available on motherboard
Connection to the system power supply is required, adapter included
300W power supply or greater recommended
*sigh* I even wrote ati's costumer service last week and asked them directly, but I have not heard from them yet.
ah well.

if its a quality (antec, pc power and cooling, ocz) a 270 should run it fine.. im running it on a fully loaded 350w system...
if its some off brand 270w, your... sol... its not the "300w" that you need really, its the rail amperages. ;) you could have a 12000000 w psu and still not be able to handle it if it didnt have enough 12v amperage.
