View Full Version : HD2900xt Not overclocking?.. HELP!
mackdaddy2887
01-18-2008, 04:11 AM
Hey all im using an HD2900xt.. previously pro, but flashed bios. the sapphire 1gig card btw.
According to Catalyst or CCC or w/e. it states my card is:
core: 507
mem: 514
now i have Overdrive turned on and already tuned and everything, it says it should overclock to
core: 848
mem: 1010
so now im out here playing Hellgatelondon.. max settings, and I alt-tab and reopen CCC to see if my card is running at the higher speeds. but alas.. in general info and on the current settings of the overdrive screen it still reads the 507 and 514. I have uninstalled my driver and CCC and re downloaded it again to make sure i have the correct stuff. The flash was done correctly because i followed the directions I got off this site to the T!
I thought the default clock speeds were supposed to be higher than 507 and 514 with the XT, but I let it slide. Now I can no longer sit back and wonder.
PLEASE help me guys.
oh and btw, im a new member, just signed up, but ive been reading these forums for quite some time, I love all you guys and this entire community thank you all.

my 2900xt says 507 gpu - 514 mem but when a 3d application is open it goes to 743-828
mackdaddy2887
01-18-2008, 04:46 AM
Yeah I know thats why I included that bit about me playing Hellgate.. thats definetly a 3d app. But yet it still says the standard clocks.. why isnt it overclocking?

Could have Alt-Tabbing out been the culprit?
Download RivaTuner 2.06 or AtiTool .27b3, and use the monitoring feature to log the gpu/mem speeds. See what they have to say.
EDIT, Oh, and fill out your system specs on this site's User CP. The more info you give us, the more likely we can help.

I find that some times it stays in 2D after ALT tabing with ATI Tool. Maybe CCC is doing the same thing ?. Only seen in happen with 7.12 drivers and not noticed it with 8.1's yet.

OK i just updated my System specs, umm.. how do you know which CCC you have? ill DL those other programs and see if anything looks different. THanks for the replys. Ok ive Downloaded Atitool .27b3 .. how do i monitor my speeds?
mackdaddy2887
01-18-2008, 07:20 AM
ok i left the monitoring thing on for a bit, turned on my game, and messed around, turned it off and came back. the monitor is nothing but a slider and doesnt tell me anything, so i checked the folder for some kind of log, and this is all i found:

2008-01-18 02:15:05 I Application terminated.
I worry about the "Could not read driver's clock table: 2" error.. maybe my video card really isnt overclocking, and the application cant read what it is.
Ok so I tried to raise the clocks to about 800 and 900, lower than what overdrive should put it, with the atitool, and whenever i hit 'set clocks' it jumps right back down to the 507 and 514. ok i went into options and checked the auto apply after moving slider button, and now i cant even move the slider, it refuses. its like stuck at pro speeds somehow. I dont know. so I uncheck the box restore everything to default and exit atitool. Now CCC overdrive is blank, it has an error and doesnt show up when i click on it?? oh and i have the newest CCC now

The card is overclocking. They made the cards this way so your not eating all the juice that you would eat while gaming.
ATi tool you should be able to turn off 3d/app. But because you have the 1GB you have to flash higher voltage via dos. Then set your 3d clocks and open up what you want to run oced.

Uninstall your current drivers, then go here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32 and download the newest ones. Install them. See if they change the behavior at all.

Click ATI Tool Settings ( Bottom right )
Select Overclocking Look at the bottom the clocks you are trying to set are to high for the clock safety and you will have to adjust these as needed.
For setting ATI tools 3D detection goto settings \ then select 3D Detection of the drop down menu at the top.
Add a sound file to that you can hear so you know if it's changing or not..

ok the safty range settings or w/e are not checked. I Dont have a .wav file to play, so I told it to turn on Quicktime when 3d is enabled. I opened the cube and alas, no quicktime. LOL. Why does it, when i enable apply automaticly when move slider, It refuses to let me move the slider, its like it refuses to overclock.
Oh and I dl Rivatuner and turned on the monitoring, played Hellgatelondon, and came back. THe gpu and mem didnt budge at all during that interval. it was a straight line all the way across the monitor. Im going to try to get some Screenshots up in a bit, headed back to school.

I just saw a post like this the other day. Apparently some people with flashed cards were having the same issues. It was the driver version making the difference. I think they said 7.11+ did it. There are also some fixes to run the newer drivers. I'll look around to see if I can find the post(s).

I dont know much about the ini files and all this mess.. im more of a basic user.. lol. They look similar there are some differences, but if i add this line to my ini file, and it doesnt work, whats the worst case senario?
edit: ok I added the file, and made a back up of the original. Nothing is different? Still no higher speeds on 3d apps. Do I need to reinstall CCC now that I changed the file?

Make a copy for the file and place it in a folder that you will remember ....edit the ini file in your support ..dir/.file/ & save it ....see what happens....in the worst case you can DEL the file and replace it with the copy ....if all else fails you can unlaod the drive CCleaner the drive and do a fresh install :D

try using this tool to force 3D clocks
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/536/AMD_GPU_Clock_Tool_v0.7.html
shut down atiTool leave riva monitor running .. set the 3d clks with the amd tool and set up the amd tool to record the clks/temps to a file that you can read/post later .... have to go out on a service call ....prob be 3or4 hours or more will check back tommorrow

Ok I reinstalled CCC with the driver reinstalling as well. Afterwards I hit 'view log' and this is what it gave me. Since my 2900xt was flashed to an xt from a pro, do you think thats why its not working? I added the appropriate line of txt to the r600, but since its actually the rd580 or w/e.. maybe?

I had to run over 3.4GHz on my 6000+ to break 11k with my 2900 core set the same as yours. Try to extract the max out of your card's core, and focus less on your card's ram. The ram speed doesn't have nearly the effect that core speed does. What's your card's vgpu set at? 1.3 or 1.35V should be relatively easy.
Probably wouldn't hurt to try to get more out of your cpu as well. On water, 1.55-1.6v is a cakewalk for bench runs on the 6000+. I wouldn't run it that way 24/7 tho.
mackdaddy2887
01-25-2008, 03:48 AM
hmm how do you change/ set your vgpu? Ill try to increase my core and get more speed. I had my cpu set up to 3.5 at 250fsb and it ran good, I definetly broke 11. Ill see if I cant break 12. Going to fool around with my cpu and gpu. What all should I do to pump out as much as I can? What about my mem timings? whats better 4-4-4 or 5-5-5? see system specs about my mem.

Is there a way I can force my system to switch to 3dspeeds? So when I play Hellgate im getting the performance im supposed to?
