I'm going to upgrade this horrid chip here soon, no need for a quad core yet... Maybe in a year or so when more things actually support them...

But I have been thinking about an e8400...

Any thoughts?

I too am going to jump on the Wolfdale wagon once I have enough funds to build my new rig (probably around march). From what I've seen on x-bit labs article on it, the 8500 pulls away from the 8400 by a considerable amount at least I think especially when its only an extra 160 MHz. But even for the price difference I don't think its worth it, the 8400 is the one to get IMO. Check out the benchies for the samples they had

They scale like that very nicely...
And personally I would probably clock that chip at least 3600 or more.

Just a thought Niko, P5K Premium (if wanting crossfire) and GB P35-DS3L are really nice P35 boards.

EDIT: Also IMO, the price difference between e8400 and e8500 outweigh the performance difference.

I was thinking about the P5K premium...

And yes thats why I'm going for the e8400 instead.

From everything I see, the new e8400 is going to be the "sweet spot" in C2D's for the foreseeable future. $200 for a dual core processor that will scale above 4 Ghz on low vcore. It really doesn't get better than this. I think going up to a e8500 is a waste of money, since there is a minimal increase in stock speeds and only a .5x increase in multiplier. I just ordered 2 e8400's myself...:D

just ordered a E8400, upgrading from a pentium D 925! I hope I'll notice a difference :-)

I was gonna go for the Q6600, which costs about the same as the E8400, but given that only 1 game (Supreme Commander) currently supports quad threads, I might as well enjoy a higher stock clock and memory FSB. Also, this chip consumes next to nothing and temps are so low, therefore less cooling effort and less noise. Finally, it can go up to 3.6GHz without touching the vcore. The benchies put it just ahead of the E6850 and it's cheaper! What more can you ask, frankly??

Don't want to sound like a jerk, but theres apps now that utilize quad core. I'd personally get a quad core. I've played with E8400's and a quad just trumps it. Buy a Q6600, you'd be glad you did.

apps are rapidly starting to support quad core, loads more than there were last year, but... to be honest my friend has a Q6600 (not overclocked) and my overclocked E6300 just seems to be more... responsive when doing things like browsing the web.ect :wtf:

I'm sure more demanding apps and games will come out in the future and will make a better use of quads. No doubt about that. The question is when, how many and am I going to use them? My personal guess is by the time it makes sense to get a quad because most applications are optimized for it, there'll be much better quad cpu's out there than the "old" 65nm Q6600, which will only be average by then.

It really depends on what you want:
- Best possible performance now and struggling in 2 yrs time but ok since you'll upgrade the cpu: go for the E8400

- Inferior performance now relative to other cpu at same price (in games), and average perf in 2 yrs time when apps and games use quad threads more, and no intention to upgrade by then: go for the Q6600

I’d like to add that if it wasn’t for the games, I wouldn’t even upgrade my Pentium D 925 3GHz, as it’s doing a great job in all applications, and provides more than enough power to watch films, browse the web, use word and excel, encode music and films every now and then etc. Games are what make the upgrade necessary, as my Pentium was bottlenecking my graphics card (ATI x1950pro). So as long as games benefit more from higher clocks than multiple threads, the E8400 wins, given my usage of it. Also, the Wolfdale has a new set o instructions SSE4.1 while the Q6600 doesn't, which might even out the so called future proof theory (although I firmly think it's utterly rubbish and there's no such thing as future proof in this world)

Quads will be the future, but by the time they are, better cpu’s will be on offer and current quads will be obsolete.

yep thats how I feel. also went with E8400. When time comes I will go quad and there will probably be newer and better than 66.

I went from an E6300 overclocked to 3.0ghz to a stock Q6600 and my Quad was 10x faster. My quad is now 24/7 3.6ghz and its just insane how fast everthing is. Make sure your friends quad has all cores enabled and his system isn't slow as shit because of spyware and stuff.

Your potential setup looks good, but out of curiosity, whats so bad about your current chip? Is there something you could do faster with a higher clock? What do you mainly do with your PC? Just being devils advocate and trying to justify you spending the money on another, albeit faster, Dual core.

No you won't notice a thing!

LOL

I got my eyes ont he E8400, but can't justify getting rid of my board and E6600 that suits me fine at the moment. Maybe next winter I'll do a complete new build.

but you already had a E6600. I can understand that, not as good of a deal for you. But if you dont and your not into muiltitasking. There's not much using the quad as of right now, why not get the E8400 its cheaper. And when games really start using quads like the man said that E6600 will probably just be average and need to update anyways. :)

Was that sarcasm? The E6750 is a great processor.

I love my E8400. 3.3Ghz at ambient temps idle, and never more than 40'C under load.

It will go higher...just need a new PSU (faulty line to the mobo :()

Jumped on the Wolfdale wagon myself tonight. Got a bit bored with the Q6600, so I am swapping them. I will let you know which one is better on Sunday.

Please do, it'll be very interesting to know more from your first hand experience :).
