It all looks awesome! Except you're getting Vista.. Not worth it. Get XP.

I bought vista basic. Uninstalled it the next day. Its not good, at all. Games I ran maxed with 30+ fps I had to run on low to get them playing and it looked pretty but its not worth it. Just get XP Home its the best OS ever.

Well, I hope it's later. I've seen a few games that now recommend over 2gb's in Vista. If you have 4gb's of ram I'd get the 64-bit Vista. With 2gb's I'd just stick with XP. It's all a matter of opinion though.:toast:

Well ram is pretty cheap, right now i have 2gb of ocz plat rev2 waiting around and it was only $30 after rebate.

edit- i just feel like its kind of a waste buying xp home being how old it is

yea but ur going to see >10 fps performance hit even under dx 9 in vista i built a system for a friend with q6600@ 2.8 and 8800gts 2gb ddr800 we ran xp and vista on it he hated vista cause for general use it was slower than xp and in games we saw a diff of about 15% in dx9, 20%+ dx 10 compared to dx9

you would figure a quad would power through all the power through the crapieness that is vista even after much tweaking the os itself was still slow and no where near as nimble as xp for web browsing file sharing ps ect.

Well i read an article a little while back from toms hardware showing the performance difference between xp and vista and it didn't look too significant. Was mostly a 5% hit according to his charts, although the article is a year old now.

On a side note i guess its kind of a good thing that the only issue people have with my choices is my OS :P

why buy anything? Just use your current OS and save up to get another video card...

Current OS is going to still be used on my dell machine *shiver*. Its going to be nice to get away from that.

edit- i'll be buying it in 1 hour unless someone can convince me of a better setup

The only thing I would say is go with 64 bit version of vista so you can use 4gb+ of ram later.

this is a much better video card than a 3870 and for a little more money you get so much more

$253.17 canadian - EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GT 600MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27704&vpn=512-P3-N801-AR&manufacture=eVGA

i agree with the others about vista, get the 64bit version because by next year it will be needed and you'll be ready

Well it's a good setup, if you overclock that CPU to 3Ghz it will be blazing fast. If not the fastest Dual Core is much better 90% of the time than that quad at stock speed...

yea, after reading a few things on the performance loss of vista and such, i decided it wasn't a big deal. And i stuck with the 3870 over an 8800gt because i'm using a crossfire board, and from what i can tell the 3870 scales well in crossfire.

looks like your going to have a great system.

deciding between 8800 or 3870 and amd or intel its just like argueing over how many drink holders your getting in your new porche lol. its all top of the line stuff so any combination will be really fast and  wow you. any choice you make is the right one:p.

good luck and dont forget your thermal paste, i was all set up and ready to build my first computer when i fugured out that i forgot to get some  i had to wait till the next day and drive 30 minutes to find a compusa to get it. i wasnt about to use that mayonaise looking stuff they gave me lol.
