the best deal may be the dell but it is a dell...i prefer my laptops to be macs because of the superior OS. 1800 is a very good price considering how portable and forward thinking it is.

imo, the mac is not worth it. if i had to pick one, id pick the sony, toshiba, or fujitsu...just not in that order. but, if you want something that is small, but will only do so much, then sure go with the mac.

If you're looking for a new computer to become your main, then the Mac Air is a terrible choice. Yea, it's super thin, but an extra pound isn't going to break your back. If you want OSX, then go with a regular MacBook. Other than that, the Air just isn't worth your money.

On a serious note, it's a sleek laptop, probably works well. You can have a laptop that will do most things that the Air does for 800$ but it's not that cool and the battery wouldn't last that long. So yeah if you have the money, by all means buy one...

I have a 15" Macbookpro, that is far more practical, and cheaper. The air is all about bragging rights.

I hate having to carry round 15" 5 pound laptops all day. The M1330 is the best of the lot i think. The macbook is just too heavy to be ultraportable.

No arguments there. I only have to carry it from the car to studio and back.(macbookpro, not macbook)

If I was looking for something ultraportable for reading e-mails, or doing a bit of office drudge, I personally would be inclined to get an eepc and spend the balance on upgrading the desktop.

And yes, the SSD drive should be standard.

I've got the m1330, and I have the CCFL display, but if you get the LED display, you get a brighter display, a bit longer battery life, and a it's thinner than the CCFL, plus a little lighter. It's apretty cheap laptop, and if you crawl throguh Ebay auctions and Buy it now, for resellers, like I did you can save over £100.
I bought mine for £600, with postage, which is the base spec. plus fingerprint reader and bluetooth module, which at the time, would have added an extra £80, onto the base spec's price of £700. Basically, I paid £180 less than direct from Dell, and got Vista Business rather than Home Premium (although I now think that was a little bit of a mistake, since Home Premium at least has the media centre). Also, I get about 3 Hrs battery life from the standard 4-cell, so I might be able to get 5 hours out of a 9-cell.

No matter which one you go for, you'll have to reinstall the OS, since they'll nearly all have bloatware.

I think the mistake was not putting an SSD drive in the basic option and removeable batteries. With that it'd be the best option there.

Yes it is. The macbook is the same thickness from front to back, 1.08" across the whole. The macbook also only weighs 2 pounds more, and has the exact same footprint.

If you consider 2 pounds more, too heavy to carry around, then you need to get out more and work out.

Again you think in absolute terms. 2 pounds more is 66% more weight. When you miniaturise seomthing, the cost isnt absolute. Try shrinking a cpu die, by 5mm. I mean its only 5mm, how hard could it be?

As for you asking why 5 pounds is such a problem. Would you care if the macbook weighed 5pounds? What about 6...7...? A line has to be drawn somewhere. Ultraportable laptops should not weigh 5 pounds.

It's not ultraportable. The EEpc is ultraportable. Air has the same footprint as the Macbook.

Thinking in % about thing's at this scale is rather irrelevant. If they have the same footprint, and the Air is only .36" less thick, then there is no situation where you could bring an Air that you couldn't bring a Macbook.

It is a technical feat, but that's not the point. It has no practical application beyond Mac fanboys.
