I'm very much considering throwing out my case and putting my pc in a mineral oil filled fish tank. it looks cool, and with a well placed pump, cools almost, if not better than water cooling. the only down side is that the CPU has to be sealed onto the HS and mobo with acrillic glue. I need to replace my mobo because of horrible defects that I never bothered to have fixed, but if I upgrade that, I'll set myself to save up for a new cpu, too. do you guys think I'll be able to clean the crap off my GPU and PSU, should I decide to upgrade and put it back in the case? I seem to recall someone saying that a dishwasher without soap was a good way of cleaning a pc

ATiGuy did it at TeamATi

Been running for years, and he didn't seal the CPU down like that. One thing he said was to remove all of the past because over time it will make the system look milky.

If you wash your motherboard, be sure to take the battery out first.

Let those parts that get washed sit for a week or so.

You don't need to get it circulating, and you don't need to seal the CPU.

I don't think it will cool better than water either way.

do a google search of "immersion cooling" youd be surprised ;)

is there really a need for a heat sync?

Yup, use a heatsink. Otherwise the oil wouldn't be able to disperse the heat quickly enough from just the small contact area.

Here is one of the more popular projects around the net:

Might be able to improve on their design with possibly a Scythe Ninja as it's a bit larger and the fins are spaced far apart. Just a thought.

I think I'd rather spend $300-360 on a great custom WC setup than 5 or 6 gallons of mineral oil...

Starting at an ambient 29C on the CPU, we found it took about an hour to hit a stable idle temperature of 37C. Not bad!

After an amazing 12 hours, the system topped out with a CPU temperature of 88C. Yes, that is really hot...on the other hand, the system was rock solid and didn't crash when running 3DMark06 for 48 hours at these temperatures.

immerse a computer in mineral oil and pump/cool the oil and then post some #'s instead of letting it all sit idle in the tank ;)

its not very cost effective anyway you look at it but it is fun!

The one that I seen pump into two TEC 200watt cooled blocks than back into the tank. The TECs where cooled by two other blocks going into their separate radiators.

The benefit there is no worries about condensation.

Oh and here's an article I saw a while back: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/09/strip_out_the_fans/

Edit... here's an article using MINERAL oil, and tries to improve on the cooking oil trials: http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php
