Hi all,

I have had an Asus W3j for about 2 years (first US release Version) with a 512MB x1600 with the last avail. BIOS. I was running the ATI 7.1 drivers for the last year or so, but as of about 3 days ago, I have started to get VPU issues that I can't seem to figure out.

Mostly I play EQ2 on it, and after a few minutes of play, the game freezes, I get a black screen for a few secs, and then the VPU resets and I get that error (while still in game). On a few occasions, I have kept playing only to have it freeze, blackscreen another minute or 2 later, and then BSOD.

I have tried the latest Omega drivers, the latest ATI drivers, and the last Asus provided drivers, and have used a driver cleaner as of the last day or two.

After cleaning the drivers the last time, and reapplying the 7.1s, I was able to play for about 2 hours today before it crapped out on me (error and then reboot).

I'm starting to think it could be a heat issues - not sure if it's airflow related (though I'm still getting a lot of hot air out of the side vent of the PC, and a lot of heat being shot out of this vent is normal) or some hardware failing under load.

Any help, advice would be GREATLY appreciated...I'm going to have to Recover and see if the issue continues before sending it in, but I'd rather it not come to that if at all possible.

Can you get a temp monitoring program? Also, have you dusted your vents?

It has prob. been at least 4-5 month since I've done anything with the vents...Air is still coming out, but maybe there's a build up internally?

It's one of those things where I'm not sure if it's software (drivers or Registry issues) causing hardware problems or hardware (something damaged on the card) causing the problem...and without cracking it open, I don't know how to find out.

I def. feel like the computer starts running weird and gets hotter before it crashes, but I may be fabricating that at this point.

Well there might not be ENOUGH airflow
