......NVidia 8800 Owners take note! YV12 output appears to be broken in many instances and with most driver versions currently available (2007). If you run into any sort of image corruption issues, try falling back to YUY2.......
found this myself and went looking for proof/varification.
well its true, the 8800 i have has issues with yv12 color spacing used in most video encodes, found this trying to watch a copy of cars a buddy brought over, the bug makes it look like ur watching tv using rabbit ears, ghost immage next to main image in green or pink......nasty nasty stuff....
this is why nvidia annoy me, its a known bugg but they ignore it, this isnt a new issue its been thru 2007 that ppl have had problems with it......all i can say is.
NVIDIA FIX YOUR S**T!!!!
btw this from a guy using an 8800gt!!!!

Just to be fair, ATI knows there is a problem with Image Scaling in their drivers, causing games to be stretched across the entire screen, and distorting the older games that don't have widescreen resolutions. To me, this is a huge issue and I plan on going with nVidia in my next build. The issue you point out will hardly be seen by many customers, where as Image Scaling is a feature many would like to use but can't because ATI won't fix it.
This is why ATI annoys me, its a known bug but they ignore it, this isn't a new issue its been known through 2007 that people have had problems with it......all i can say is.

there are various fixes around for your problem OrbitzXT mostly for older games that dont nativly support widescreen res.
nvidia has known about this all of 2007 and hasnt fixed it, and it effects playback of any movie encoded in YV12(most of them), you can get around it by dissabling YV12 rendering in the decoders you use(coreavc/ffdshow/exct) but i would bet more people have seen this problem then have the wide screen problem.
i agree tho ati should fix it soon or at least add something to drivers allowing you to set the thing to old game mode.
oh and yes there really are fixes for non wide screen games, i have used them at my buddys house because all his monotors are WS now(mines 1600x1200...hehe)
some games you gotta manualy edit files to "support" ws mode, this isnt hard, i have set many older games to run at 1680x1050 just by editing the ini/cfg/cf files, if that wont work then you gotta google around for guides on workarounds, i dont need to because 99% of the time i can find a fix on my own.
nvidia are known to ignore long time buggs they ADMIT TO for years, since the early 7 seirse theres a known bug with nvidia drivers under xp64, it forced you to do a clean install to get an nvidia card working, causes instant crash as soon as you try and access the card beyond a 2d desktop level, i have called nvidia about it, guess what they said, its a known issue but its not considered critical to fix.
if enought of a stinks made about driver buggs they will get fixed, just like the stink that was made months back about a bad batch of 8800gt's, nvidia finnely had to RMA a good portion of the first batch of cards from its resellers because they had bad volt ciructes.

wow, most of the time it's a pissing contest about who's better, now it's about who's worse.
grow up guys. both companies have their strengths, weaknesses, flaws, and "known issues," so give it a damn rest.
and chilly, you might want to change your sig before you get in trouble. :shadedshu

You're talking about games that have ways of adding widescreen support, there is a widescreen gaming forum dedicated to that. I'm talking about much older games that don't support widescreen resolutions at all, no fixes. Starcraft, WC3, Fallout, etc. Those are games I love and have no fixes. With WC3 you can set the resolution in the registry, but it'll still be stretched out and distorted without functioning Image Scaling.

Just tried enabling YV12 with my ATI x1900xt and colors sifted. Like arm red went to side of the are and a bit liney. Have had it disabled in BSplayer all the time, so won't be a problem for me. Says on the popup that some graphic cards may have problems with YV12 color space and it seems so. It's not just 8800gt issue.

my 1900xtx never gave me these problems, infact i tested it against the 8800gt after i got it back from service(cooler fan died) it works fine, bsplayer has....issues.
also using divx codec dissables yu12 mode using rgb32 mode insted, xvid and ffdshow and x264/coreAVC use yv12 first if you dont dissable it/move it to the bottem of the list, and every video i try and render with them that uses yv12 dosnt work properly on the 8800gt 512mb i have, on the other hand if i swap out the 8800gt with the 1900xtx it works fine.......nvidia admited this issue to BFG's head tech when i reported it to him he said that they know about it but its not a high priority, nvidias top prioroty at the moment is to squeeze all the perf out of crysis they can.......nice.......dumbasses.......
if you need help dissabling yv12 mode in ffdshow let me know i will talk ya thru it, not hard just kinda hard to find that section.
i have owned both companys cards for years, nvidia use to be the ONLY cards i liked, till the fx line, after that i moved to ati. since then i have owned 6800gt/7800/7950 cards tho i sold them after finding driver issues that just drove me crazy, i have owned 9600/9800/x800/x1900 cards from ati, all have been better driver wise if not alwase hardware wise then nvidias cards(my 1900xtx is still a damn good card to be honest) nvidia has issues in their drivers that litterly drive me crazy, that makes me sad because to be very honest if they fixed them i would like nvidias drivers better, or at least the control center(CCC sucks, ati need to stop using it!!!)

Wow, that explains the random pink/green colouring I saw in a bunch of videos with my 7600GT. I thought it was just a decoder issue.
And my friend has a widescreen laptop with a go 7900gs and it has tons of issues with games that don't support it natively. The exact same issues that I have when I connect my X1950 pro to anything widescreen.

read the link irish, it explains what it is
and yeah alot of older games dont support widescreen, its one reasion i stick with 1600x1200 or other non WS monotors for now, i game alot and its a pain when you gotta fight with drivers/software to fix problems, theres alwase telling ur monotor to not strech the image to fit the screen(most have this someplace in the monotor menus) laptops.....well ur SOL if u cant find a fix urself or on another forum.
an exectly what u said madcow(nice name!!!) its that same load of crap, as i understand it this shouldnt be a hard fix, its just that they are to lazy to fix it when they could be finding ways to get 1-2fps boost in crysis.......
