I finally got around to starting the COD4 single player campaign.. Has anyone tried playing (and beaten) the game on Veteran mode? I can't tell if it's impossibly difficult or I'm just a terrible gamer... I'm stuck on the TV station mission, in the big broadcast room with al the screens.
It seems like people just keep coming... All I can see are grenade warnings surrounding my screen and I swear those soldiers are aim-botting

LOL! Yeah just get some practice up. I beat the game on veteran. The hardest part for me on veteran mode was the end of the sniper mission.

wtf... Practise what? .... You can't take cover anywhere because they pop up all over the place or flank you out with three grenades.. And if you stay in the same place do enemies keep spawning until you reach somewhere else?
That's starting to piss me off about this game... There seem to be trip points that trigger enemies to start or stop spawning...
Which sniper mission? Probably not the first one..

Practice getting better at a COD4 of course. You can't just step into the game and be a master of the game. It's like any sport, practice makes perfect.
There is only one sniper mission that I know of in COD4, and that's the one I'm referring to.

The very beginning one? (the one with the Russian village) That was a sniperish mission...
That's the only one?... That wasn't hard at all

I'm not going to give any spoilers I dont want to ruin the game for you, however, I will say there is one true sniper mission (where you are a actual sniper). :toast:

Unfortunatley, ninety percent or more of games ever released, suffer the same symptoms when it comes to difficulty settings.
There's novice, which is really easy, and even a half-blind eighty year old could figure it out. Then there's normal or average, which is for anyone who knows how to play games, and is somewhat challenging. Then there's hard mode, (though coined many different ways) and this is for the person that's really good at that particular game (either dexterous, or just knows all the 'good spots'). Finally we have extreme mode, (again, coined many different ways, "ultra," "nightmare" etc.). This is at the other end of the spectrum from 'novice.' It's not difficult in a challenging way, it's not even that the enemies or the AI is more intelligent. Often they are simply super-human, ten times stronger, and over abundant in numbers, where they appear randomly, suddenly, without logic, and swarm you until you die, without rhyme or reason.
COD4 is no different in this regard. Unfortunatley playing on the most 'difficult' setting isn't difficult at all, rather it's just a nuisance.
It was cool with Contra 3, where enemies got abundant, ridiculous and god-like in resilience. But this is a decade and a half later. With all the nonsense developers spout about IQ and AI, they sure don't back it up.

From the TV station mission, does it just get harder?

The problem I had with COD4 is that it was so short that I wanted to go back and play the harder difficulties just so I could get more play time out of the game.

That's kind of why I'm playing Vet...
It's not like I just started playing, I've played quite a bit of MP... And I expected the feel to be similar to original CoD. Which it isn't...

Unfortunate indeed. I suppose if the game wasn't as linear, you could approach missions from a different angle or perspective, thus increasing replay value, but not having to succumb to using a more difficult setting.
Oh well, short and sweet!

My favorite part about the game is the very very last mission, no spoilers here though.

at thegave...I found the only way to get thro it was to go in the door to the central room...by the shotgun. Keep left and you will see your guy behind the first wall..you go to the second halfwall(toss a nade in the doorway). bury yourself in and look at the catwalk..you will see a guy comming out...shoot him. Then lean to your right ...you should see a guy with a RPG on the left side of the catwalk. Once they are dead make your way to that room. Get in there and work you way to the opposite corner from where you start.
This should limit the directions from which you are taking fire and will hopefully keep you alive long enough to get thro to the next lvl....good luck!

Word of advice for veteran mode. If you die, remember how the enemy killed you where you died. Prefire next time, because the damn AI are aimbots.

As in go straight along the left wall towards the side room? (as opposed to going right along the open side

I alway go str8 in the door and stay left....your dudes will stay right and cover that while you work to the room. once you get there they regroup and help cover the door while you shoot out the window and avoid nades.

On that part (the central room) I always run in and go straight to the right and to the closet room all the way to the right. I've never been killed in that room, and it's pretty easy to pick off the enemies one by one from there. If grenades are thrown in the room, they are easy to pick up and throw out because the room is so small. But that's just my approach.

fuck yes. finally did it...
@Ravenas: wtfno! The grenades aren't easy to throw back because there are so friggin many of them and half the time I end up throwing my own instead of picking the ones up... Or they blow up while I'm in my hand.
I tried going down the right and chucking flashes down that way, but the people in the far rooms kept picking me off.
in the tv station bit, i found that unless you get to the other side of the room from where you go in, the enemies KEEP respawning. Basically you get to the other side of the room and shoot everyone from there, then it should let you through into the next bit. The only other bit i found REALLY hard was also the end of the later sniper mission, i just couldnt do it, in the end i had to turn down the difficulty to normal!

OK wow I'm infuriatingly stuck again. On the SAS mission where you're waiting for Gaz to open the basement door, I keep getting mowed down as soon as I move towards the door..
I think I might wuss out of this... Is there a way to change difficulty on a campaign you've already started?

Hehe, unfortunately no. That part takes a while to figure out. Right before you run in, throw flashes and grenades. After that try sprinting in. I can't remember exactly, but I think that's what I did.

Flashes don't seem to have an effect on those Russian soldiers though....
Now I'm being raped by the helicopter and getting pretty fed up...

OK. So this bit where the helicopter is making another pass... Since the shooter in the chopper keeps respawning after 5 seconds if you shoot him out, what the hell are you supposed to do? I can't get any cover outside and as soon as I get to the barn I get perforated like a sponge....
I gave up taking out the helicopter... I do the guy behind the truck on the far right, then I run into the house in the middle, take out the people through the window. Then go back around to the right and into the barn... But if the soldiers in there don't kill me the chopper does through that stupid gap on the left.
Done.
Jeeeeezus.

Call me a quitter but I gave up and restarted on Novice mode.
I've been stuck on the "Safehouse" mission for about a month... Just want to enjoy the game and play it through.
Question though. Do I still need to recover all the secret intel?

lol  same here! anybody want to join up on cod4 :D
I played it in the one below Veteran. The ending of the sniper level gave me trouble to. I got sick of replaying it over and over, so I pulled the chicken move. I ran off and hid in an alcove in the buildings until the clock ticked down. Funny thing was only 1 or 2 enemies came and found me so they were easy to kill. The gimpy buddy we carry out to the LZ must do a pretty good job of holding his own as he was still there alive when I cowered back to haul him on to the chopper.

i was stuck in the tv station part on veteran then i beat it but got stuck outside it was bloody hard i usually just ran to trigger the next part and making enemies stop spawning
btw the end of sniper mission theres a trick that worked for me near the bumper cars theres this little room thing (i think were you bought the tickets or somthing) just go inside and go prone and wait patiently and eventually you get the next objective no nade killed me only one actually hit me from outside the ai cant get any in and you dont encounter any enemies trying to get in either
