I am not well versed at all on networking. I had to call the folks at Linksys just to get my wireless going :slap: So I need a little help from the pros around here. :)

First, some tech info. I am on DSL using a DSL modem. My router is a Linksys wireless G. My comp is wired to the router, while my wifes laptop is on the wireless. We both are running XP SP2.

Basically, I want to be able to access the files on my wifes laptop from my comp. How do I go about doing this?

you could use file shareing, windows XP has lotsa built in support for that, you could use an FTP server [what i like to do cuz its easier for me cuz thats what im used to doing]

fileshareing is something you will have an easy time finding help for, for sure

\\IP\c$

You can find out the IP by typing ipconfig in the command prompt. Of course us the IP of the other computer. Also, make sure your systems aren't isolated from each other on the router. Some Linksys Routers offer this option, it makes devices unable to see each other.

use windows file and printer sharing.

right click a drive letter or folder:

click "you understand the risk"

check "share this folder"
enter a share name, can be anything to describe the share or just something short
click ok

to find the files on another computer, open my network places -> entire network -> microsoft windows network. from there just browse around until you find the right computer. you can drag the computer to your desktop and make a shortcut to find it faster

easiest thing would be to put those certain files into the shared folder on your wifes laptop.
Then make sure your wifes firewall is set to allow for file sharing.
then go to my network places -
view workgroup computers -
double click on wifes pc and go to shared folders.
If all goes well you should be able to see the files in the shared folder on your wifes laptop..
