my main pc is where i spend most of my time, i dl a lot of torrents and lately if i leave my computer online dl'ing something my roomate's rig cannot connect to anything, he then comes over and shuts mine off and low and behold his pc is working. we have a 20mbit cable connection so it shouldn't be so hard to leave mine dling. he notices it first in world of warcraft, his latency will skyrocket and then the game will dc, then he can't dl anything himself or browse the web, i've done multiple bandwidth tests and i'm finding that we're having no problem with speeds, cox gives us 20 theoretically and actually i'm getting about 15mbit all the time. i just don't know what to do, i like to leave my computer on dling stuff and then come back later and it's all done, but lately i cannot do that?? is there something wrong with my computer, this install of windows is only a few days old??

well i'm using windows xp sp2 with firefox 2.0.0.12 latest. and i'm using utorrent. i've also modified my tcp/ip stack to accept up to 50 simultaneous connections. i've tried with the default of 10 and the max i've tried of 50. but so far no change.

That`s exactly what I was going to recommend !

get an openWRT compatible router, use openWRT + X-WRT, and then use its QoS.

seriously, it will keep your torrents from ruining everything else.

could you get a little more in depth about this?

i ended up reinstalling windows and switched to a netgear router i had, i think the router had just about had it, it was an ancient router from the wireless b days lol. i am liking service pack 3 though if anybody has given it a shot, it's a stable upgrade for vista and i haven't had one problem with it yet
