will a 3850 work with a 6pin?

OK now that i'm waiting for the 3850agp to show up. Should i order a 6pin-to 8pin adapter or will a 6pin work? (running a 600watt psu) will i need 8pin to overclock or is it just a scam :)

to power the HD38xx series you need a 6pin power plug...not an 8pin

I stand corrected....that first AGP 3850 is an 8pin....maybe it will work like the 2900's did and, possibly, you are just missing the 2 grounds as well. IIRC its just to unlock CCC Overdrive.

I see what you mean. From that post and from pictures it seems it needs an 8-pin. That's interesting, as you need a fairly new PSU to get an 8-pin or a LOT of molex adapters :)

I'll look into it a bit more. I bet once it's out, keep an eye out for reviews for it. I am confident a few sites will address the issue and probably try it.

Also true, it barely uses more power than my 2600xt gddr4 did, and actually at idle uses far less.

I can't say for certain on the 6pin in an 8pin, but generally it works and just locks you from overclocking in ccc.

Well according to what I have read, that particular card needs a lot more power than what's supplied through the PCI-E interface, so an 8-pin might be needed. Like I said, wait for a review to address it and try it, or just buy the damn adapter with it! :)

It doesn't need all the power of a pci-e slot.... It "needs" more power than the agp port will supply... We are talking about an agp card here, which is the only reason it has the 8-pin connector also.
