What would be the average idling temp for a non overclocked 9600 with stock cooling?
The heatsink on my card only feels slightly warm.

If it's based on the RV350 core then I'd guess that it idles in the mid 40's. Why not use the latest ATITool's temp monitoring feature?

It doesnt have a temp monitoring chip
Im going to get a digital thermometer and touch it to the heatsink and find out.

the xt runs at 38 not oc'ed, and no load, and oced to 580/340 it runs at 44:) pretty good if you ask me, at load thought it pusses the mid 50's.

should the heatsink feel hot to the touch???? I have a regular Iceberq, and it just feels slightly warm.

Depends on the heatsink - the Iceberq should feel pretty warm, if not hot, under load. As for idle operation, it should feel somewhere between room temp to slightly warm. I don't think that you have anything to worry about - In my experience, poor/partial contact between the chip and heatsink unit results in a really hot heatsink, given how hot the bare part of the chip can get.

ive got a 9600xt 128mb and it idles at 30-32C standard clocks, and pretty much around the same temp for 544mhz clock....is there sumthing wrong? And i cant overclock the memory, when i set it to find mex mem it starts to artifact and actually lowers the mem clock below the standard clocks....and by what ive seen my core clock is pretty low compared to others...any suggestions?

Under heavy load, 35.27777777777778 celsius or 95.5 fahrenheit
The cooler is a copper, 5000 rpm fansink. (Iceberq)
