View Full Version : To Mac or not To Mac?

Would you use a mac, or not? Pretty self explanitory. IMO.

As for me, No. Our school has them, and I've tried using it. I think they're rediclous.(sp?). The layout is cluttered, and it's a PItA to navigate. The design is also crazy. Who in their right mind would have the whole system IN THE MONITOR? Seriously. There's also no scroll wheel on their mouses, which makes surfing the web a pain.

Does this site look like a Mac site to you? :P

From the sounds of it, you already answered you own question, but if you must have an answer, I say not to Mac. They're good for their uses, but I see no point in them for any of my applications. I do know that my buddies that work at Newspaper and Magazine offices use a lot of Macs, always have...but they are starting to switch to PC more and more.

No. XD

I had no intention of going Mac, I just wanted people to say wether or not they use mac or not. I think that I was a little unclear :o

oh they're awesome macs are more user friendly then windows actually.. most people at my school actually prefer the mac interface a lot better then the windows.. as we have dual boot imacs. and the mice do come with a 4 way scroll wheel and imacs are basically a laptop except you switch the keyboard part of the laptop with the screen and then detach it and you've got an imac. its actually very good cause its better for moving it around and less clutter and space required. i'd recommend grabbing an imac or atleast legally installing osx leopard on your pc.

soo true. this is tech power up, a hardware enthusiasts site. when was the last time you could overclock a mac?

if you really want osx on your pc check out this link (although it might not be too legally friendly unless you own a mac/leopard installation disc)

I freaking love my Mac, and OSX, and everything about it. The OS is rather intuitive and only seems to be difficult for power users (like most of this site) to get used to. The majority of my friends have recently made the switch, or have tried mine and go "wow that's pretty sweet".

I still dual-boot for games and stuff, since not everything (including my college, not counting the art department) is very Mac friendly.

Regardless, if you don't like it, then you don't. No big deal. I still have a funny feeling this will turn into a Mac bash-fest like any other Mac thread here.

I would never buy a mac. If I won one then I would sell it and spend more on my PC and games :p Macs are just too simplistic. You cant game on them and theres no OCing afaik

If I wanted to have a more classy interface, I would have to go with Ubuntu. Beryl blows anything that Mac or Windows has to offer out of the water. I suppose that if I had to create movies and photoshop stuff then I would go with a Mac, but then I wouldn't be able to do anything else on it... Even Linux has more useful Windows alternatives than Mac in terms of applications.

It might just be me, but all I need is a small grey box with icons or links to my programs and a command line as an interface. Even Vista is way too much fluff for me. I run Windows XP with the themes service disabled.

An OS is meant to run your applications, not your time.

why would i buy a pos mac, when i can get a pc that i can make myself, oc the hell out of it, and it will cost a third of the price, i also HATE their mouse, its crap i mean no right and left click come on, i gave macs a shot and i could not stand them, i prefer doing any photo editing on the pc versus mac, i find that its not faster either way

Coke vs. Pepsi

Same argument, you could do the same poll for PC and I would also say I would get a PC. Completely pointless poll because each are better at particular things, and each has their flaws.

I have to disagree. The PC has many more applications (you don't have to be locked into 1st party software) and a much wider range of hardware (Lenovo X61t beats Macbook Air in every technical category--it has a titanium reinforced frame with a magnesium roll-cage).

How in any way could the Mac be better (other than the aesthetic?)..

This a totally flawed argument, after using the PC for many years and the Mac for only 3 years has proven to me that this argument is flawed.

"Locked into 1st party software", you obviously don't have much Mac experience.

It's just like the Windows comps. you get access to everything 'cept the Control panel, the root drive, or anything to change stuff.

"Software Availability - Though many might argue that anything you might need is available for Mac, and though almost all generic task software is, industry specific software is not. For example, if you own.. say a lawnmower repair shop, you might want software written exclusively to run lawn mower repair shops. You just won't find it on the shelf or by mail order for the Mac, while you have several to choose from for Windows, maybe even for free or cheap as shareware downloads."

I do run several Linux machines and OSX is basically an improved non-free version of Linux.

I haven't really used Macs extensively but from what I've tried it's horrible. Maybe it's because I'm just so used to windows. I mean where is the start button?!?!?!? And why's it so like hard to find things and open the hard drive. I couldn't even open itunes when I was trying one at the store, couldn't find itunes on a mac....how ironic. You might say it's because you don't know what you're doing, but me to like it I have to be able to start it and go hey there's itunes and that's how I do it. I don't want to search for stuff. Now would I take a macbook and load windows on it, yeah defiantly they're really nice. Only thing is they defiantly run on the hot side...

I could find a million different sites that disagree with those sites, its just the nature of ho fanboys are.

I can run ABSOLUTELY ANY windows app on a Mac wether it be through Parallels, Boot Camp, or VMs. Not only that, but to this date, I haven't found a single one of my PC programs that I actually want on my Mac.

You can't explain to people how both are good, because more than half of the people voting don't actually own a Mac, or have used a current Mac for more than a year on a weekly basis.

flashstar
02-19-2008, 04:04 AM
I can run any Windows app on VM's on Linux as well, or through Wine, Cedega, etc. My point is basically that OSX doesn't offer anything more than Ubuntu or SUSE even though it costs money. It also has a much smaller selection of programs.

On the hardware side of things, Mac's are much closer. Compared to a HP or Dell, I confess that Mac's are superior. Also, Macbooks are superior to most Windows notebooks in terms of innovation and style.

Unfortunately, at this time PC's simply have more positives than Mac's. I'm not saying that Mac's are explicitely bad, and I'm not telling anyone to get a PC because they "rule". It's clear that for the majority of users, PC's are better.

These days a Mac is just a proprietary PC. If given one, I'd use it. But I'm a tinkerer, and Macs are mostly closed systems so I doubt I'd do much to upgrade it in the long term. Instead, I'd focus my efforts on my built PC.

Hmm, lets see.

For gaming, overclocking, and tinkering with, I have a pc.

For a reliable, general use machine that never fails me, I have a macbook.
And no, not an air, as that is a fashion accessory. :shadedshu
For when I feel like gaming on the go, there's WOW on my mac, or vista via bootcamp.

I really enjoy modding and playing with my pc, but equally enjoy the pick up and usability of the mac. Each has their own appeal.

Hey, I'm on this forum now at work on my mac. What more would I want?:rockout:

No mac. Had my hands on a couple all the way up to OSX. Got tired of them. PC was waaaay nicer to me. As for pick up and useability, I disagree. Any OS takes time to learn to use it effectively. Therefore it comes down to hardware and compatibility for me. PC ftw.
