well, i finally found a solution to the problem of COD 4 quitting, apparently there is a bug with the file mssmp3.asi which is found in X:\...\Activision\Call of Duty 4- Modern Warfare\miles (replace X:\... with directory the game is installed under)

to fix the problem backup mssmp3.asi and rename mssmp3.asi to mssmp3.bak keep the backup as a .asi incase of problems- as far as i know it works for Athlon K7 CPUs but possible chance it may work with any System.

Thanks to this link here i can play the game Fine on a Athlon XP-M 2500+ at 3200 Speed (1.87-> 2.21GHz) 2 Gigs PC 4000 DDR, and a Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro 512 AGP. 14th Post Down.

Nice work eidairaman1! Glad to see you get to enjoy CoD4 as it should be, too bad you had to mod a file, but in the end I love CoD4 and feel it's worth it. More for MP than SP though, but both aspects are awesome!

Again, nice work! :toast:

i think Infinity ward put that in there to prevent Users of Older Parts to not be able to play game cause i suspect they think majority of K7 Users are still on Radeon 9600 cards or dont know how to overclock. I just wonder if .asi files are problematic for K7 Parts or what. But honestly is there anyway to put a vote on this topic as to whether it should becoe a Sticky or not?

PM a Moderator for a Sticky request and see what they have to say. You can add a poll, but really this thread is very unlikely to be stickied since it only covers one issue...if it covered more issues for CoD4 problems in the first post and the users/staff felt it was helpful, there may be a stronger chance of getting it stickied. I've seen more helpful threads fade into the history pages...no offense, that's just kinda how it goes.

But nonetheless, this is a very helpful topic, and at the least you could link this thread in your Sig to keep it alive and helping others!

damn, this was important to me not long ago! had some AXP users at a lan who couldnt run the game, so in the end we went to CoD2.

Wish i'd known this sooner.

I set up my old Barton 2600+ / nForce 2 / 2x 512M / GeForce FX 5600 machine up for an epic low 3DMark '03 score. I'm surprised I'm able to play HL-2 at very nice frame-rates. It could be also that SP2 for XP comes with a custom AMD K7 driver that makes use of the expanded 512 KB L2 cache of the Barton core and allows the Bus-Disconnect mechanism when the system goes stand-by (powers down the CPU).

so btarunner whats the driver that is found in SP2 that is used cause i just pulled up the CPU for my System under hardware and it states the driver date is 4/1/2004 driver version 5.1.2600.0

now on softpedia there is a K7 5.1.2600.1152 driver, im just wondering if that is newer as of release date or what cause softpedia doesnt provide proof of where it came from etc.

looks like station drivers have the same
they are known for having the Beta Release drivers for ATi cards, im sure they have nvidia beta aswell.

Okay, I installed the OS. I'm using this Barton on my brother's A7N8X-E, updated from Windows Update. Here's the driver file version.

I can get the Bus-Disconnect feature from this driver because each time I set the system on stand-by, the LED's next to the ethernet port go off, something which wouldn't happen earlier. You can use S2KCTL to use this function if you're using an older driver.

ok same driver i got then, so i shouldnt worry about getting those other drivers then huh?

They come with SP2. You don't have to worry. Driver enhancements for the K7 are only because the processr.sys driver used by XP wouldn't let the HAL access the extra 256 KB cache on the Barton and a useful feature, Bus-Disconnect was not being supported. Hence Microsoft bundled the amdk7.sys driver along with SP2 as a mandatory update for K7 users. Without the driver, Barton users would have had to override the L2 cache value in the Windows registry. Additionally, each time you send the system to stand-by S3 power state, the system saves at least 70W of power, cools the processor this way. To have manual control over this feature, use S2kCtl: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Athlon_CPU_SoftCooler_d4216.html

well i dont use the power saving features since ive noticed standby can be harmful to a HD, but in other news, i think AMD has bombed big time with the Cat 7.8s and higher as i tried installing 7.12s and then i had to install the Hotfix- the 8.1s do suck for AGP- so it seems i need to go back to 7.6 or 7.7s. I also wonder if the Creative Labs Beta driver is causing some laginess in a game

I just really wonder if the Machine still doesnt detect the Full 512KB Cache, Ya know- also do you know where this registry Tweak is may i ask?

its an old tweak that was of dubious value to begin with (i never noticed the change when i used it) and XPSP2 DEFINATELY fixed it. XP's autodetect was just buggy at the time.

It was extensively discussed in this thread: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=47468
