View Full Version : Screen Rotation Problem With Asus A9550

I recently hooked up a second monitor to my existing computer system. My original monitor is an Apple 20” cinema display and the new second monitor I bought is the Dell 24" WP2407 Ultrasharp Wide Screen monitor.

I have rotated the Dell monitor vertically to use it for retouching vertical images and it has been working fine that way on my existing system. All I had to do was adjust the display driver settings for my Asus A9550 video card to display vertically on my second monitor and that was it.

As my hard drive which is running XP and all my programs seems to be on its way out, I decided to buy a new hard drive and reinstall XP and all my programs before it totally dies out on me.

So today I installed the new version of Windows XP SP3 and all my software and drivers. All is fine until I try and set the video card to display vertically on the Dell monitor when I get an error message which says the following:

"The requested rotation mode is not supported by your current display mode (resolution and/or refresh rate and/or color depth) please change the current display mode and try again."

I have tried all kinds of configurations and nothing works. The system just won’t rotate the image vertically on the Dell monitor no mater what.

Other than the OS being XP SP3 on the new drive and the OS install on the old drive being SP2, l made sure all settings for the video card driver and so forth are identical on both drives. It makes no sense at all. I even keep switching back to the old hard drive (which has the SP2 version of the OS install on it) and there is no problem at all with it still on vertical display on the second monitor. So the Dell still displays vertically without a problem even when going back and forth from OS to OS and drive to drive and I meticulously checked for hours upon hours today going back and forth between the two hard drives and operating system installs to make sure I have all settings identical between the new drive and the old one.

The driver I am running for the Asus video card is the one that came with the video card when I bought it and it works fine on the Windows XP SP2 install as I mentioned.

In fact, the driver also works fine on the new Windows XP SP3 install as I mentioned except for not being able to rotate the display settings vertically for the 2nd monitor.

I also downloaded the latest driver from Asus for 9550 AGP cards, but that did not install correctly so I eventually gave up on it and took it back out. I also downloaded 2 other newer drivers for the video card, one from the ATI site as well as from Omega Drivers, but I have not put either one in yet. My guess it is not a driver related problem since the driver works fine with the monitor rotation issue on the other older install of XP.

I am really at a loss here for any further ideas on what to do here and any thoughts would be appreciated.
