Whenever I boot up any game or 3D app my 3870 X2 starts to make a very odd whining noise. It sounds electrical and it isnt coming from my speakers because that was my first instinct. It dosen't sound like the fan becasue it comes and goes depending on whats on screen. It also makes a really fast high pitched clicking sound when i play company of heroes when i scroll the screen. The sound started from the day I installed the card and it is really strange. My x1950pros made no such sounds aside from the loud coolers on them. I am wondering if it is a ground problem or an EMI related problem. Whatever it is it is very irritiating and if any one has a clue as to what it is im all ears.

Is there anybody else with a 3870 X2 that can confirm this issue becasue im starting to think that my card has some issues.

My 7600GS did that. The cooler is just loud and annoying, cant really fix it unless some aftermarkets come out for it.

I got it from FS so i can exchange it for another one but I just wanted to see if anybody had an idea what is causing it.

Nope, my X2 doesn't speak Starvin' Marvin language.

it looks like the 3870x2 wont last long though. the 4870x2 will be out in like 2 months.

I have this issue with my 3870, and I think my mate said he had it too. My other mate had it with his old x800.

If you load up ati tool and do the 3d render it will act sinusoidialy.

I dont think its an issue really, just something electrical making a noise... I might be wrong though.

JAmes.

Any whirring noise is usually causes by a bad bearing, or a defect in the fan. It would be best to get a replacement fan, or RMA it.

it would be faster to return it and get another.

actually, weren't the 3870's and 3870X2's out early? =P They were slated for Q1 and Q2 respectively.
