Which one would give me more performance? I game at a... relatively low resolution by today's gaming standards (1152x864). Needless to say I will be overclocking both :rockout:, will be using the stock cooler(s) on both solutions, so no vmods unless temps are very low for some reason...

Always go one single high end card rather than two mid/low end..

the 8800 would destroy those cards....unless you did vmods etc..then you may beat one stock MAY an 8800 oc'd would kill it....the 9600 would as well and the 8600's combined have the same amount of pipes...and shaders.

Hmm... I just hope the 8800gs is in my price range when my birthday comes.
It's $160 now... the geforce 9 series, and whatever competition ATI has for nvidia MAY push it down into my range! woot!

But wait a minute... the 8800gs is 384mb... I wanted a 512MB card... so...

Yeah I'm keeping my eyes peeled on this guy..

I already got free molex's hanging around so no extra cables needed... 512mb... fast enough for what I want to do! I hope it comes down to my price range!

I know 384MB is enough for now but 512mb is a little more futureproof... so I kinda want that. Besides I like the way that cooler is. My PCI slot cooler has 2 fans on it... one is a fan that blows air around... in this case straight up into the fan... and the other sucks it out so its like the graphics card isn't even putting any heat in my case! here's a crappy diagram I drew up in Paint:

The red thing looks like a penis and secondly the memory doesnt matter the 8800GS will destroy both of them!

this is an 8800gts now... single 8600gts vs single 8800gs... but doom3 says it needs 512mb memory to run on Ultra and I figure the extra memory will come in handy in the future...

Emmm no.. the extra stream processers will come even more in handy.

Hat? Still didn't answer the question.....

I am trying to look out for you here. I don't want you to make a bad decision with getting a vid card that will only be limited to one certain resolution. I mean, hey if you want to spend the money then do it, but it wouldn't be nice if you had a card that ran 1650x1080/1600x1200 but is limited to 1280x1024/1440x900.

EDIT: And 384MB will be fine, and don't worry about Doom 3. I can utilize Ultra @ 1440x900.

He seems to use a strange 1152x8?? configuration?!! Save your money a bit, by the time some of these new cards are out, you'll be able to have an 8800GT cheap!

I've never heard of a video card that only supports certian resolutions! Just the "max" resolution (which is insanely high anyway).

so 8800gs it is! but will the 8600gts be an O.K. alternative if the 8800gs disappears/does not fall in price by June and the GTS does?

No. Do not get a 8600GTS no matter what. Just get a HD 3850 instead if thats the case.

A smart guy like you should know from reading bench's.:D It's all in how you want to play your games... I would get a 8600gts IF you can get one real cheap and v-mod it. Otherwise a gs or 9600GT will suit you fine.

I never said anything about the video card supporting one resolution. I was helping you out if your planning on utilizing the card to its full potential with your current monitor.

Always go one single high end card rather than two mid/low end..

agreed. but not even mid/high end, jsut one faster card will always be better then 2 slower ones, especially when taking into account SLi compatibility with games and subsequent performance. not to mention you really only start to stretch SLi's legs in excess of 1280x1024 or more (with 8600's), you will see a gain at lower res, but not as substantial as higher.

@wolf

Or unless you own a certain powerful gpu now and find one cheaper later. Then you would benefit from going SLi. It may withhold you from having to get one of the more expensive video cards if on a "budget".

yeah good point, like in my postition one 88GT is ample for now, but in 3 months when the price is hella low as theyre almost EOL i mite nab another :D

well its an 80mn chip and costs about as much as a G94 to make so i would guess soon, prolly in the next 3-4 months or sooner.

Remember how fast things like the 6800GS/6600GT/5700Ultra vanished when there replacement arrived
