I was going to go with a Phenom and the DFI 790FX board but after reading on the E8400 from Intel the 45nm die shrink looks like more than just a die shrink but some good performance added as well. Now my question is should I go with a Dual or Quad 45nm? I mainly play games, watch movies, and encode quite a bit of audio on my system but I do some video encoding as well(Sony Vegas primarily). Looking at my apps I really don't see many that would use the quad but many of you have been in this game longer than I and have used Intel much longer than I(It's been 8years).

if you encode i think a quad would be better but the application must support 4 cores

out of curiosity how does your current system handle vegas and other things u do.. ??
for example do u just leave it running and get on with other things.. or do u have to wait for things to finish..

Most of the time I am doing other things like surfing the internet, listening to music, or just reading without any problems. I CANT play a game though at the same time and that really isn't a concern to me. If I kept this system for another year the only thing I feel I should upgrade would be the memory, to 8Gb, and maybe get a 1TB drive to replace my 500Gb Seagate due to constantly having to clean it up. Maybe I would get another vid card but from what I understand crossfire wouldn't do much for me, I wouldn't notice much of anything, due to my 22" Acer LCD limiting me by the 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Video editing is alot more demanding on a system but I understand you have to have apps that can take advantage of the extra cores and I know Vegas does well with the setup I have now so I guess I'll just wait til Nehalam or whatever it's called and just upgrade my memory and an extra card.

sounds like u are okay as u are.. more storage is always useful.. it can be carried over to any new system as well.. i like external usb.. just keep adding to it as u need it..
but u dont really need to upgrade your basic system.. its okay for a while.. i aint sure about 8 gigs of memory 4 seems enough to me.. but it depends..

I'm still at 2gb of ram... 2gb is enough for 3 more months.

this argument is always over simplified..
dual.. e8400

quad.. qx9650..

why use these two.. simple.. the quad is simply the dual sat along side another identical dual.. same clocks..
a true dual quad comparison.. i have the dual why.. ???
two reasons mainly.. the big one is cost.. the band for buck factor aint in my league.. the lesser reason being i dont need the quad..
my e-peen would grow but thats about it..
