I had the same issue, couldnt correct the issue without reinstalling the drivers. Also I do believe it was only with the newer 8 series drivers. I went back to the crysis fix drivers and all is good again!

Here (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=30533) is a link to where you can get it ...scroll down and see the links for XP or Vista. Get it and save it to desktop.

Then I run the driver CD and install the hotfix over the top.

Make sure to completely remove the old drivers before going through this! I suggest add/remove programs>>> delete drivers>>>> restart.

Get back to desktop and run a registry cleaner>>>restart.

Then do the install....sorry I kinda put the cart before the horse here:laugh:

how do i run a registry cleaner ?

sneekypeet
02-23-2008, 11:10 PM
sorry download this (http://www.ccleaner.com/) and install it. Open Cleaner click on the blue registry cube at left. run it and fix entries. no need to back it up!

you said to run the driver CD and install the hotfix over the top. so you mean to install the cd driver and then after that install the hotfix or am i getting the completely wrong

sneekypeet
02-24-2008, 12:53 AM
I installed the driver (CCC) off of disc. restart of course....then runt the Crysisfix...let it do all the swapping and installing . Should be good to go.

Also if the CD CCC is in , go to overdrive and see if the clocks are correct. The application of the crysisfix I needed because I played Crysis( demo needs it as well).

Personally this combination of drivers has netted me my best 3D06 score as well!

ok i did all that but it still says that the gpu clock is 800

Sorry to hear that...it took care of my issue. Maybe someone else here has a better idea for ya.

Not to insult you, but are you looking at the Current clocks section near the very bottom of the Overdrive page?

I have to say that these 8.1/8.2 drivers have something built-in that is doing a lot of "extra" stuff. (and not in a good way...)

fafa21
02-24-2008, 02:27 AM
yeah and allso in gpu-z

Random Murderer
02-24-2008, 02:30 AM
yeah and allso in gpu-z

gpuz shows your 3d clocks, not your current clocks.
the only sure way to know what the current clocks are is to use the monitoring tool in rivatuner.

Dr. Spankenstein
02-24-2008, 02:49 AM
And you've never flashed the BIOS? This is out-of-the-box behavior?

fafa21
02-24-2008, 02:55 AM
Yup. but it's not a regular card it came with an after marke cooler and is factory oc so maybe that's why.

Dr. Spankenstein
02-24-2008, 03:29 AM
All the literature for you card says it should include ATI Powerplay.

Have you verified via RivaTuner that it runs @ 800MHz while idle? Are your temps high?

If it truly is running @ 800MHz all the time, you need to send that puppy back.

Give us a screenshot that has Riva/CCC/GPU-z. Preferably Riva.

sneekypeet
02-24-2008, 03:46 AM
I had to uninstall everything...now that Im thinking more.I had to take out ATItool and Riva to get back to stock 300MHz.

If you have not OC'd then overdrive once unlocked, will show 300 idle if it is.

the rivatuner monitor is the best tool to show whats really happening and when..

Newegg dosn't have these cards anymore and If you send it back they might just refund your money. Also for some reason there are no good HD3870 on newegg for some reason.

Wish I could, but as of late I have no mobo for that system, so my HD3870 is on a bit of a vacation, untill I get a new mobo.....sorry!

But I didi notice if you had tried to OC with riva sometimes it locks on....I PM W1zzard about it....he said to try a different driver. Took me 3 attempts before I got mine back to correct operational settings.

EDIT:...my assumption is when you are removing the drivers , there are "bits" left in the windows System32, and Prefetch folders in the C: drive.

sneekypeet
02-24-2008, 06:00 PM
I uninstalled everything graphics related when I had the issue...Atitool, riva , and CCC.

Im anal about my drivers tho.....I really go uninstall those 3 things>>>>restart

run Ccleaner, and Driver Cleaner pro(with all ATI cleaners run in the box at once)>>>>restart

Run APK registry Cleaner to be sure( anal and takes a while)>>>restart

ADVANCED
Start>>>>My Computer>>>>C:>>>>Windows(most likely needs unlocked to see )>>>>then I look and remove the leftover bits in the prefetch and System32 folders here. BE CAREFUL. If you own a ATI chipset mobo , you need to verify before removal. Being on an Intel X38 this will not be an issue, you can remove all ATI related bits!>>>restart

After all of that I reinstalled the drivers...allowing me to recover my 300MHz clockrate.

If you go through all of that and it still will not respond correctly to just the CD driver install( no need to patch )????? I'd get set to RMA.

If you want to flash it yes , load image. Also save the original. If it doesnt work by flashing it, then you can still reapply the original BIOS and possibly still RMA

well there is a chance to kill the card yes...if done correctly there is less chance of that. I have flashed mine and it worked . When I had the clock issue tho it was entirely driver based. the Bios is only going to set the PLL change or fan speeds , not what you are looking for!
