well, i was just playing a bit of universe at war when, for the first time with this card, the screen froze with sound continuing to loop. today, the screen was completely corrupted and so i closed the game and took a screenshot; time to RMA?

I wouldn't say RMA I would say time to check your voltages...
Your power supply is a bit weak to hold that card overclocked with a clocked quad...
I would clock your video card back to stock clocks and see what happens, willing to bet it doesn't freeze up.
Well it didn't take a great deal of thinking either! If it's artifacting in 2D... that's bad. Something broke, and not likely due to overclocking. I wonder if something's shorting? Did you use any AS5 on it?
Here we go with power supplies again...
My uncle's Pentium D 3.4, 2x1GB DDR2 667 3-3-3-8, 3 hard drives, high-end motherboard and factory overclocked 7950GT only draws 207w when playing Call of Duty...

i would say check your bios settings, a while back i had a board that did similar things depending on settings, i forgot which setting but the choices were on, off, or auto, off did artifacts in 2d, on did artifacts in 3d, and auto did artifacts in neither, PCIe downstream pipeline or something like that i think, my new motherboard doesnt have that option
[aero is 3d accelerated right?]

Please remember a 7950GT is HARDLY a 8800GTS, and a Pentium D 3.4 is HARDLY a Q6700 @ 3.3ghz.... Also as you just said "Factory Clocked"
There is a very large power requirement difference here.

interesting...after i restarted the computer, i immediately tried universe at war again and it was fine, although i did change a few things such as the amount of AA (from 8x to 4x) and the fan speed from 60% to 90%. i'd have no issues with an RMA except for the down time; prolly a little over a week from the time i send it to the time i receive it.
edit: power draw has only ever peaked at 342W from the wall...so assuming 80% efficiency, that means my system is actually using roughly only 275W

actually iv had those problems too actually the same problem....if i run crysis at 8x AA instead of 4x AA i get mad artifacts...

maybe i should wait until the summer to do an RMA when i dont actually need the computer for anything...or my card completely dies, whichever comes first.

Probably the best bet, clocks can have odd effects also...
My 3850 at 735/1005 will lock up in Crysis after about 15-20 minutes.
@ 720/1005 its perfectly fine
@ 740/1005 its perfectly fine
Also today I edited my bios instead of clocking with riva tuner-
Low Power and 2D set to 300-396
3D and UVD set to 740-1005
That works perfectly... But..
Low Power and 2D set 300-1005
3D and UVD set to 740-1005
Locks the machine when it attempts to switch clocks.
Funny part is both clock sets are perfectly stable alone... So lots of odd issues that can arise, sounds like yours very well could have been either settings or a temperature problem. If anything take off the heatsink and re-apply some good thermal paste if your not certain about it.
